Men's Hockey Secures NESCAC Playoff Berth, Falls in OT at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team booked their ticket to the NESCAC tournament, but fell to host Colby College 1-0 in overtime on Friday night from Alfond Rink. With the loss, Conn falls to 9-12-2 overall and 7-10-0 in NESCAC play, while Colby improves to 9-11-3 overall and 5-9-3 in conference action.

It was a slow start for both sides, as Colby (9-11-3, 5-9-3 NESCAC) recorded the first shot of the game at 3:47. Conn (9-12-2, 7-10-0 NESCAC) responded just 10 seconds later with their first shot, but Quinn Kennedy (Silver Spring, Md.) had his shot turned aside. Both goalies looked sharp, as the game was scoreless after one.

Colby made a push in the second period, looking for the opening goal, but Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.) kept the Mules off the board. Once again, neither team found the net, as the game headed to the third scoreless. In the final frame of regulation, Conn had the better chances to find the opening goal, but the Camels were unable to beat Andy Beran, as the game headed to overtime knotted at zero.

The Mules opened the extra session strong, firing off two shots in the opening minute, but Dynan remained strong. The Camels had a chance to win it, as Kei Yasuda (Nagoya, Japan) had his initial shot blocked, but fired the second chance on net, and Beran stopped with the rebound trickling just wide. Colby went back the other way and Griffin Grise beat Dynan to give the Mules the 1-0 win and the extra point.

Colby held a slim 26-25 edge on shots, while winning 33 of 49 draws.

Dynan was solid in net, finishing with 25 saves. Cole Eichler (King, Ontario), Sean Detloff (Harrison Township, Mich.), Michael DiMascolo (Cranston, R.I.), and Kennedy led the Camels with three shots on goal each. Logan Cleary (Mentor, Ohio) won four of five face-offs while Conn went 1-1 on the penalty kill and did not receive a power play.

Beran picked up the win, making 25 saves. Grise tallied the only goal, with Jake MacDonald and John McElaney adding an assist each, as Colby finished 0-1 on the power play.

Conn wraps up the regular season tomorrow afternoon against Bowdoin at 3:00 p.m. in Brunswick, Maine.
