Women's Water Polo Sweeps CWPA Weekend at Washington and Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa - The Connecticut College women's water polo team swept all four games at the CWPA Eastern Weekend hosted by Washington and Jefferson, defeating Grove City 20-12, Washington  and Jefferson 18-16 OT, Wheaton College 17-4, and Penn State Behrend 14-13. With the four wins, Conn improves to 5-0 on the season.

Conn 20, Grove City 12

In the opener, Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the opening quarter, before Conn responded. Gigi Sandull (Kenilworth, N.J.), Emma Luna (Wahiawa, Hawaii), and Ainsley Cornwall (San Mateo, Calif.) scored three straight goals, as the Camels led 3-2 after one. Luna pushed the lead to 4-2, before back-to-back goals from Sandull made it 6-2. A goal from Grove City cut it to 6-3, but goals from Sandull and Sarah Franco (Weston, Conn.) gave Conn an 8-3 lead at the half.

The Camels started the second half strong, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter to extend the lead to 11-3. The Wolverines answered with two straight goals, before Luna added two goals and Sandull converted another to push the lead to 14-5. Grove City ended the quarter with three straight as Conn led 14-8 heading to the fourth. The Camels scored four straight to open the fourth quarter on two goals by Sandull, one from Franco, and one from Cornwall. The teams traded goals over the final three plus minutes as Conn came away with the 20-12 win.

Conn 18, W&J 16 OT

The opening quarter was a back and forth first quarter, as the Camels got two goals from Franco and one from Cornwall, but trailed 4-3 to Washington and Jefferson after one. Luna and Sandull opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals to put Conn up 5-4. W&J tied the game at five, before one more goal each in the final minute had the game tied at six at the half.

Sandull gave the Camels an early 7-6 lead in the third quarter, but the Presidents battled back to tie it. Sandull and Luna went back-to-back to push the lead to 9-7, but a late goal for W&J gave Conn a 9-8 lead heading to the fourth. The Presidents tied the game early in the fourth quarter, before each team scored four more goals, as the game headed to overtime tied at 13. In the first extra session, Conn got goals from Cornwall, Sandull, and Brooke Brandenburger (Sacramento, Calif.) to lead 16-15 with three minutes to play. W&J tied the game at 16 with a minute and a half left, but goals from Sandull and Franco gave the Camels the 18-16 win.

Conn 17, Wheaton 4

The Camels continued their strong play, jumping out to a 8-1 lead after the first quarter against the Lyons. Cornwall recorded a hat trick in the opening frame, while Maddie Baybeck (Ann Arbor, Mich.) notched two goals, with Anna Taylor (Pleasanton, Calif.), Gicel Zuniga (Norwalk, Conn.), and Melia Lorch (Encinitas, Calif.) each adding one goal. The second quarter was much of the same, as Franco, Taylor, and Zuniga gave Conn a dominant 12-3 lead at the break.

Taylor added two more goals in the third quarter, while Baybeck completed her hat trick, as Kendall Foley also found the back of the net. Heading to the fourth quarter, the Camels lead 15-3. Baybeck and Grace Isola (San Mateo, Calif.) both notched a goal in the final quarter, as Conn came away with the 17-4 win.

Conn 14, Penn State Behrend 13

It was a slow start for Conn in the final game, as Penn State Behrend jumped out to a 6-3 lead after the first quarter. In the opening quarter, the Camels got goals from Brandenburger, Cornwall, and Luna. Conn opened the second quarter with three straight goals to tie the game at six. Sandull, Luna, and Taylor found the back of the net, before the Lions answered with two straight, going back in front 8-6. Lorch cut the deficit to one, but Behrend added a goal to lead 9-7 at the break.

The third quarter was low scoring, as the teams combined for just three goals. Luna made it 9-8, but Penn State pushed the lead back to two. Late in the frame, Taylor notched her second goal of the contest, as Conn trailed 10-9 heading to the fourth. Back-to-back goals early in the fourth from Brandenburger and Franco put the Camels in front 11-10. The teams traded goals, tying the game at 12. With just over a minute left, Franco and Luna went back-to-back to put Conn up 14-12. The Lions got one more goal, but the Camels held on for the 14-13 win.

Conn returns home for the first time this season, hosting Iona University on Wednesday night at 5:30 in Lott Natatorium.
