Murray Named D3hoops.com Region 1 Player of the Year

3/12/2024 1:55:00 PM

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The popular website D3hoops.com announced its 2023-24 All-Region Teams this afternoon, and Connecticut College senior David Murray (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) earned first team honors and was named Region 1 Player of the Year.

It marked Murray's third player of the year award this season, and he is the first from Conn College to earn the distinction. Earlier on Tuesday he was named the NABC District 1 Player of the Year, and following the regular season he was tabbed NESCAC Player of the Year.

Murray garnered all-region honors for the second straight season, as he was a third team selection last year. He was joined on the first team by Shane Regan (Wesleyan), Tyree Mitchell (St. Joseph), Aaron Nkrumah (Worcester State) and Henry Vetter (Trinity).

Players were nominated for these awards by the sports information directors at the various schools, and a total of 812 players were nominated nationwide. The ballot was then made available to selected SIDs, who voted for a predetermined number of players in their region.

It's the 23rd season D3hoops.com has named All-Region teams. Players who are selected to All-Region teams are eligible for the D3hoops.com All-America teams, which will be released March 16 at the national championship game.

Murray led Conn and ranked among the top five in the NESCAC in scoring (17.7 ppg), rebounding (8.9 rpg) and blocks (2.2 bpg) while shooting 58 percent from the floor this season. The big man's 53 blocked shots led the NESCAC during the regular season and ranked 27th nationally.

In his final season at Conn, Murray recorded career highs in points (425), rebounds (213), blocks and assists (36). He etched his name into Conn's single season records for points (fourth), blocks (fifth), rebounds (sixth) and field goal percentage (sixth).

Murray also stacked up impressive career totals, despite losing his first season to COVID and the bulk of his second to illness. In 67 career games he made 60 starts and amassed 935 points, 508 rebounds, 113 blocks, 90 steals and 76 assists. He ranks second among Conn's all-time leaders in field goal percentage (.573) as well as fourth in blocks and ninth in rebounds.

The Camels turned in one of the best seasons in recent memory, going 18-7 overall and finishing third in the NESCAC with an 8-2 league record. The 18 wins are the most since 2001, and the eight league victories are the most since the NESCAC began championship play in 2000-01.
