NEW LONON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's water polo team hit the water in Lott Natatorium for the first time, falling to visiting Iona University 14-4 on Wednesday night. With the loss, Conn falls to 5-1 on the year, while Iona improves to 6-9.
Conn (5-1) who had Gigi Sandull (Kenilworth, N.J.), Emma Luna (Wahiawa, Hawaii), and Sarah Franco (Weston, Conn.) all named CWPA co-Players of the Week, jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead off a goal from Sandull a minute into the contest. Iona (6-9) responded with three straight goals to move in front 3-1 with 5:10 left in the opening quarter. Luna got a goal back for the Camels at 3:42, but the Gaels once again tallied three straight, extending the lead to 6-2. Franco scored late in the quarter, as Conn trailed 6-3 after one.
The scoring slowed down in the second quarter as there were just two goals scored. Both goals came from Iona, as the Gaels led 8-3 at the half. Iona continued their run to start the third quarter, scoring three more goals to push the lead to 11-3. Luna finally ended the Gaels' run with 3:17 left in the quarter, but a late goal from Iona gave the Gaels a 12-4 lead heading to the fourth quarter. Iona added two goals in the final frame to come away with the 14-4 win.
Grace Isola (San Mateo, Calif.) got the start in goal, finishing with one save in one quarter of action. Maddie Baybeck (Ann Arbor, Mich.), who was announced as CWPA Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, played the final three quarters, and recorded four saves. Luna led the way with two goals, while Franco and Sandull both added one.
Conn heads south for a neutral site contest, as the Camels travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. to take on Washington and Jefferson on Monday at 2:00 p.m.
