BRUNSWICK, Maine - Kate Coughlin (Reading, Mass.) scored six goals to lead the Connecticut College women's lacrosse team defeated host Bowdoin College 10-5 on Saturday from Ryan Field, for the Camels first win over the Polar Bears since 2001. With the win, Conn improves to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in NESCAC play, while Bowdoin falls to 2-3 on the year and 0-3 in conference action.
It was a slow start for both sides, before Conn (3-2, 1-2 NESCAC) opened the scoring midway through the opening quarter. Coughlin got the Camels on the board at 8:04 as Emma Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.) notched the assist. Two and a half minutes later, Coughlin doubled the lead, before completing her hat trick with 3:11 left, off an assist from Eliza Ritter (Glen Head, N.Y.), as the Camels led 3-0 after one.
Bowdoin (2-3, 0-3 NESCAC) got on the board early in the second quarter, thanks to a woman-up goal from Annie Moore. The Polar Bears cut the lead to one at 8:13, but Coughlin pushed the lead back to two at 7:25 with an assist from Julianna Ingrassia (Garden City, N.Y.). Neither side found the back of the cage for the rest of the quarter, as Conn led 4-2 at the break.
There were just two goals scored in the third quarter, as Campbell Johnston (Duxbury, Mass.) tallied both goals for Conn, as the Camels led 6-2 heading to the fourth. Bowdoin struck early in the final frame to cut the lead to 6-3, but Coughlin tallied her fifth goal of the game to make it 7-3. The Polar Bears once again cut the deficit to the three, but three straight goals from Ognibene, Greta Panke (Milldale, Conn.), and Coughlin put the Camels up 10-4. Bowdoin added one more goal late, as Conn came away with the 10-5 win.
Conn outshot Bowdoin 27-17, while controlling 10 of 17 draws.
Viollette Nidds (Ridgewood, N.J.) notched the win in the cage, finishing with eight saves. Coughlin paced Conn with six goals, while Johnston notched three points on two goals and one assist, while Ognibene added a goal and an assist. Panke recorded a goal, while Aine Downey (Brookline, Mass.), Ingrassia, and Ritter all added one assist.
Conn picked up 16 ground balls, with Panke and Eliza Shamah (Acton, Mass.) both scooping up three. The Camels caused seven turnovers, with Downey and Nidds both causing two. Conn was 21-23 on clear attempts, while controlling 10 draws, with Downey corralling four.
Caroline Clinton got the start in goal for Bowdoin recording nine saves. Moore paced the Polar Bears with three goals, while Anna Kelly added two points on a goal and an assist.
Conn returns home to take on Westfield State on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. on Silfen Field.
