NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's water polo team opened up the Collegiate Water Polo Conference Championships, falling to Washington and Jefferson 9-4 on Friday night from Lott Natatorium
Conn started quickly jumping out to a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the contest on a tally from Emma Luna (Wahiawa, Hawaii). Two and a half minutes later the Camels doubled their lead on the second goal of the contest for Luna. Washington and Jefferson answered with a 3-0 run to end the first quarter, leading 3-2 after one.
The Presidents continued the run to open the second quarter, tallying two more goals to extend the lead to 5-2 with three minutes to play. The Camels finally ended the run with the third marker from Luna with 34 seconds left, but a W&J goal in the dying seconds had the Presidents in front 6-3 at the break.
The scoring slowed down in the third quarter, as Washington and Jefferson outscored Conn 2-0 in the frame, taking an 8-3 edge into the final frame. The Camels struck early in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to four, as Gigi Sandull (Kenilworth, N.J.), hit the back of the net just twenty second in. Conn had chances to cut into the lead more but were unable to, as W&J added a goal with 1:24 remaining to come away with the 9-4 win.
Conn returns to action tomorrow morning as the Camels continue CWPA Championship action against Wheaton College at 11:30 a.m. in Lott Natatorium.
