ERIE, Pa. - The Connecticut College women's water polo team traveled to Erie, Pa. to take part in a CWPA Weekend hosted by Penn State Behrend, where the Camels dropped all four games. With the losses, Conn falls to 7-6 on the year.
Augustana 19, Conn 6
The Camels started quickly, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead as Gigi Sandull (Kenilworth, N.J.) put Conn up 1-0 at 5:55. Augustana responded with two straight goals to take a 2-1 lead, before a goal with just over a minute left from Emma Luna (Wahiawa, Hawaii) had the game tied at two after one. The Vikings used a strong second quarter, outscoring the Camels 7-1 in the frame, with the only Conn goal coming from Luna, as Augustana led 9-3 at the half.
Augustana continued their strong play in the third quarter, once again outscoring Conn, this time 5-1, with Luna completing her hat trick. In the final quarter, the Camels got goals from Brooke Brandenburger (Sacramento, Calif.) and Jada Keen (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii), but fell to the Vikings 19-6.
Carthage 12, Conn 8
The second game on Saturday started like the first, with the teams tied at two after the first quarter. The even play continued throughout the first half, as once again both teams scored twice, as the Camels and Firebirds were tied at four at the break.
Carthage took advantage in the third quarter, outscoring Conn 4-2 in the frame to lead 8-6 heading to the fourth quarter. Again the Firebirds led the way on the scoreboard, with another 4-2 quarter, coming away with the 12-8 win. Sandull led the Camels with three goals, Sarah Franco (Weston, Conn.) recorded two goals, and Brandenburger, Keen, and Luna all added one goal.
Austin 15, Conn 14
Conn started quickly in the first game on Sunday, jumping out to a 1-0 lead just over a minute in on a goal from Sandull. Austin answered with two straight to take the lead, before Brandenburger tied the game at two. The Roos retook the lead, but a quick answer from Luna had the game tied at three after one. Austin opened the second quarter with three straight goals to move in front 6-3. Luna ended the run, but a goal from the Roos and a tally from Franco made it 7-5. The Camels cut the lead to one on Luna's third of the game, but Austin scored twice in the final minute to take a 9-6 lead at the half.
Sandull opened the third quarter with an early tally for Conn, but Austin answered right back with a marker. Sandull took over with two straight tallies making it a one goal game. The Roos scored two of the next three goals, but two goals from Luna tied the game at 12 heading to the fourth quarter. Austin scored early in the final frame to take a one goal lead, but Brandenburger answered right back to tie it. The Roos went back-to-back to go in front 15-13, before Keen made it a one goal game with a minute left. However, time ran out on the Camels, as Conn fell 15-14.
Macalester 15, Conn 4
The Camels opened the final game with an early goal from Sandull to take a 1-0 lead. However, the Scots answered with two goals to lead 2-1 after the first quarter. Macalester started the second quarter with two more goals, pushing the lead to 4-1, before Ainsley Cornwall (San Mateo, Calif.) ended the run with a tally. The Scots responded with two more goals to lead 6-2 at the half.
Macalester opened the third quarter with an early marker, but Sandull's second of the game made it 7-3. The Scots used a 4-0 run to end the quarter to take an 11-3 lead heading to the fourth quarter. Macalester's run continued to start the final frame with two more goals, making it 13-3. Sandull completed her hat trick, but the Scots ended the game with two more goals to come away with a 15-4 win.
The regular season has to come to an end, as the Camels will get ready to host the CWPA D3 Women's Championships beginning on Friday, April 19. The Camels finish as the fifth seed and will take on Washington and Jefferson in their opening game in Lott Natatorium, scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
