Camels Honored at 2024 Senior Athletic Awards Reception

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Women's soccer player Mya Johnson, women's volleyball/track & field standout Emma Wheeler, and men's basketball player David Murray were among the student-athletes who were presented with major awards at the 2024 Connecticut College Senior Athletic Awards Reception last week.
 
The event, which was held Friday evening in Evans Hall, celebrated the achievements of the senior class over the past four years. Seven student-athletes and one staff member were recognized with major awards. In addition to Johnson, Wheeler and Murray, other awards were given to Sean Elliot (campus photographer), Dillyn Zindler (women's lacrosse), Hope Olson (women's basketball), Rebecca Oberman-Levine (women's basketball) and Brendan Mellitt (men's cross country/track & field).

Three members of the Conn College coaching staff were also recognized. Both Chrissy Chappell (field hockey) and Matt Anderson (water polo) were honored for 10 years of service, while Ned Bishop (women's cross country, track & field) was celebrated for 40 years of service.

Anita L. DeFrantz Award (Top Female Student-Athlete): Mya Johnson and Emma Wheeler
Established in 1995 by Kathryn Smith '84 and given to the female member of the graduating class whose athletic ability, leadership, and sportsmanship best exemplify the qualities of Olympic medalist Anita L. DeFrantz '74.
 
Anita L. DeFrantz Award (Top Male Student-Athlete): David Murray
Established in 1995 by Kathryn Smith '84 and given to the male member of the graduating class whose athletic ability, leadership, and sportsmanship best exemplify the qualities of Olympic medalist Anita L. DeFrantz '74.
 
Brown/Brooks Award (Top Female Scholar-Athlete): Rebecca Oberman-Levine
Established by the class of 1984 and given to the outstanding female student-athlete who best represents the graduating class in scholarship, leadership, and sportsmanship.
 
Brown/Brooks Award (Top Male Scholar-Athlete): Brendan Mellitt
Established by the class of 1984 and given to the outstanding male student-athlete who best represents the graduating class in scholarship, leadership, and sportsmanship.
 
Erica M. Bos Award (Inspiration): Mya Johnson
Established in 1990 to honor an athlete whose courage, motivation, and relentless determination serve as an inspiration to others.
 
Andrew H. Chait Award (Service): Sean Elliot, Dillyn Zindler, Hope Olson
Established in 1986 to honor a member of the College community who has shown outstanding service and commitment to the Connecticut College Department of Athletics.
