Field Hockey Blanks Wellesley for First Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team scored twice in the second half to defeat Wellesley College, 2-0, Tuesday night in non-conference action at Silfen Field.

Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) scored both goals—one in the third quarter and another in the fourth—as the Camels picked up their first win of the season. Conn's defense was solid all game, and goalie Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) made two saves to record her fifth career shutout.

Neither side managed a goal in the opening 30 minutes of play, although the Camels produced the best scoring opportunity of the half. A shot by McGann hit a defender at the goal line and drew a penalty stroke with 5:03 left in the first quarter. Maddie Mason (Brentwood, N.H.) stepped up to take the attempt, bur her roller to the left corner was snuffed out by goalie Hannah Simmonds.

In the second half, the Camels cashed in on their second penalty corner with 8:39 remaining in the third. Mason took a shot from the wing that was tipped by Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) and stopped by Simmonds. However, the rebound was batted around and eventually trickled out to McGann in front, and her backhanded lift put the Camels on the scoreboard.

After fending off a pair of Wellesley shots late in the third, the Camels added some breathing room less than four minutes into the final stanza. Conn managed three shots on one penalty corner, the last of which McGann buried with another backhanded flick. It marked the fourth time in her career that she scored multiple goals in a game.

The Camels finished with a 15-6 edge in total shots and 7-6 advantage in penalty corners. Simmonds finished with five saves in goal for the Blue, who dropped to 2-2 overall on the season.

Conn (1-2 overall, 0-1 NESCAC) will next host Bowdoin College on Saturday, September 14 at 11:00 a.m.
