Men's Hockey Tripped up by No. 9 Hamilton

NEW LONDON, Conn.– The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team dropped a NESCAC matchup, falling to visiting Hamilton 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Conn falls to 6-7-1 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while Hamilton improves to 12-3 on the year and 8-1 in conference action.

Conn opened the afternoon quickly as Jack Luca (Milton, Mass.) forced a save from Aksel Reid just 37 seconds in. After two more saves from Reid, Hamilton answered with three quickfire shots, but Will McEvoy (Ottawa, Ontario) answered the early call. However, with just over seven minutes remaining, the Continentals opened the scoring. Liam Varmecky's shot from the point sneaked by McEvoy off assists from Grisha Gotovets and William Neault, as Hamilton led 1-0 after one.

Hamilton continued their strong play to start the second period, forcing four saves from McEvoy in the opening minute. The Continentals doubled the lead at 7:15 as Jacob Ierfino made it 2-0. Conn was able to kill off a penalty midway through the frame, but just after the penalty expired, Hamilton pushed the lead to three. Nick Kent squeaked a shot past McEvoy at 13:56 to give the Continentals a 3-0 lead heading to the third.

The Camels came out strong in the third period, trying to cut into the deficit. Conn was able to do just that at 4:12. John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) had his shot stopped, but the rebound fell right to Luca who tapped the puck home to make it 3-1. Conn continued to push and pulled McEvoy with two and a half minutes left for the extra skater. With the extra attacker out, Conn was unable to claw any closer, falling 3-1.

Hamilton outshot Conn 44-25, while holding a slim 38-36 on face-off wins.

McEvoy got the start in goal, finishing with 41 saves.Luca tallied the lone goal, while Russo and Quinn Kennedy (Silver Springs, Md.) both picked up an assist. Russo led the way in the face-off circle winning 15 draws, while Conn finished 3-3 on the penalty kill and 0-1 on the power play.

Reid picked up the win in goal, finishing with 24 saves. Nine different Continentals recorded one point with Ierfino, Kent, and Varmecky each tallying a goal, while Hamilton went 0-3 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill.

Conn returns to action on Friday afternoon, as the Camels host nationally-ranked Trinity at 3:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
