WBB Coasts Past UMSV

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team picked up a wire-to-wire win over the University of Mount Saint Vincent, 90-51, Friday afternoon in non-conference action at Luce Field House.

The Camels shot a season-high 51 percent from the floor en route to their second-highest point total of the season. Hayle Thompson (Maynard, Mass.) paved the way with game highs of 17 points and eight rebounds, one of 14 Conn players who found the scoring column. Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) and Catherine Cole (Lebanon, N.H.) also finished in double figures with 11 points apiece.

The Camels drew first blood with a bucket by Thompson and never yielded the lead. Thompson added two more field goals in the opening quarter as the hosts built a 22-14 cushion after the first period.

Conn took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Dolphins 20-3 over a 7:19 span to pump the lead to 25. The Camels opened the period with back-to-back threes by Hallie O'Toole (Wilbraham, Mass.), and Catie Donadio (Clinton, Conn.) later added seven points to fuel the stretch. Thompson tacked on a pair of jumpers in the final 1:02 of the half to bring the margin to 48-26 at intermission.

The Camels didn't lose any steam in the second half and buried eight of their season-high 14 three-pointers after the break. Paige Raynor (Storrs, Conn.) hit a pair of threes and netted all eight of her points over the final 20 minutes, helping Conn to a 41-9 edge in bench scoring. All told, eight Camels registered a trey in the contest as the team shot 47 percent from beyond the arc.

UMSV, playing for the first time in nearly three weeks, dropped to 6-5 overall on the season. Erin Smith paced the Dolphins with 15 points while Gretta Baker added 14.

Conn (8-4 overall) will next host Arcadia University on Saturday, January 4 at 2:00 p.m.
