WBB Falls to Trinity

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team fell by a 75-50 final against Trinity College on Friday night in a NESCAC showdown at Luce Field House.

Trinity took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Camels by a 24-13 margin to lead by 12 at intermission. Melissa Whitmore netted 16 of her 18 points in the first half and finished 4-for-4 from beyond the arc to lead the Bantams.

Hayle Thompson (Maynard, Mass.) scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds to pace the Camels. Valeria Santiago Dedos (Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico) added eight points and three steals in 16 minutes off the bench.

Neither team led by more than three in the opening quarter. Avery Burns (Orleans, Mass.) scored seven points in the frame and gave the Camels a 12-10 advantage on a lay-up with 2:36 left in the stanza. However, Whitmore shot 4-for-4 in the period, including a go-ahead three-pointer that put the Bantams on top for good.

Whitmore continued with the hot hand in the second quarter. She drilled back-to-back threes to extend the margin to double digits at 25-15 with 6:33 left in the half. The Bantams went into the break with a 39-27 lead, and Whitmore shot 6-for-7 from the floor for the half.

Trinity scored the first nine points of the second half to bump the lead to 21. Conn eventually cut the deficit down to 14 by the fourth quarter, but a late charge gave the Bantams plenty of cushion.

Thompson shot 8-for-11 from the floor and also finished with a block and a steal. Santiago Dedos scored all eight of her points in the second half.

Conn (10-10 overall, 0-6 NESCAC) will next host Wesleyan University on Saturday, February 1 at 3:00 p.m.
