Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Connecticut College men's water polo team returned to action, falling to host Iona University 21-9 on Sunday afternoon from Hynes Pool.
It was a back-and-forth opening quarter, as Iona opened the scoring 35 seconds in, before Carson Neidert (West Palm Beach, Fl.) connected with Matthew Maischoss (Malibu, Calif.) who fired home to make it 1-1. The Gaels jumped back in front off three straight goals, before Zach Dixon (Wayne, Pa.), Jesse Ellis (Fresno, Calif.), and Jeffrey Harrington (San Diego, Calif.) each found the back of the net to tie the game at four. Iona ended the quarter on a 3-0 run to lead 7-4 after one.
The Gaels continued their run to open the second frame, pushing the lead to 8-4, before Ellis cut into the deficit. Iona answered back with four straight goals, extending the lead to 12-5, before a late goal from Ellis cut the deficit to 12-6 at the break.
Keegan Kosiba (Birmingham, Mich.) opened the second half with an early tally for Conn, making it 12-7. However, Iona answered again, this time reeling off a 5-0 run to push the lead to 17-7. Maischoss beat the buzzer to end the quarter, as the Camels trailed 17-8 heading to the fourth.
Dixon struck early for Conn in the final frame, cutting the deficit to 17-9. Unfortunately, Iona closed out the game with another 4-0 run to come away with 21-9 victory.
Conn returns to action on Saturday as the Camels travel to Erie, Pa. for an MPSF weekend of three games, beginning with Johns Hopkins at 9:00 a.m.
