Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Runs Unbeaten Streak to Six with 1-0 Win at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine – Gavin Vanden Berg (Lake Forest Park, Wash.) scored early in the second half, and the Connecticut College men's soccer team ran their unbeaten streak to six straight games with a 1-0 win at Bates on Saturday from Russell Street Field.

It was a back-and-forth opening 20 minutes, as both sides were able to generate one shot on goal. Tomas Alberola's header forced a save from TJ Krongard (Montclair, N.J.) in the 13th minute, before Max Haberman (San Diego, Calif.) was denied by George Nassar.

Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) put a shot wide with 10 minutes left in the half, before Caleb Huang (Hopkinton, Mass.) had a shot blocked with five minutes remaining. Neither side found the back of the net in the final minutes of the half, as the game was scoreless at the break.

Conn opened the scoring just 93 seconds into the second half. Matt Quiros-Newton (Alajeula, Costa Rica) floated a pass to the back post, where Vanden Berg headed home to put the Camels in front 1-0. Vanden Berg nearly doubled the lead two minutes later, but Nassar came up with the save.

The Bobcats answered with pressure looking to even the score, but back-to-back shots from Luke Cunniffe and Alberola missed the target. Bates continued to push, as Zach Perron forced a save from Krongard in the 66th minute.

However, the Camels defense locked it down from there, limiting the Bobcats to just two more shot attempts. Both chances down the stretch from Bates missed the target, as Conn closed out the final minutes to earn the 1-0 win.

Conn outshot Bates 14-11 overall, including 3-2 on shots on target, while holding a slim 3-2 edge on corner kicks.

Krongard picked up his sixth clean sheet of the season, finishing with two saves. Vanden Berg tallied the lone goal of the contest, while Quiros-Newton chipped in an assist.

Nassar got the start in goal for the Bobcats, recording two saves.

Conn (7-2-4, 3-2-3 NESCAC) returns home on Saturday to host Williams at 3:00 p.m. on Freeman Field for senior day.
