Field Hockey Drops Season Finale at No. 7 Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team suffered a 6-2 setback in its season finale against No. 7 Wesleyan University on a cold and windy night at Hicks Field.

Wesleyan, which extended its winning streak to eight games, finished the regular season with a 7-3 record in NESCAC play (12-3 overall). Leila Feldman provided three goals and an assist as the Cardinals clinched a share of second place in the league standings.

The Camels fell behind 1-0 in the opening minute of play but quickly fired back. Margaret Sadak (Glastonbury, Conn.) split a pair of defenders with a pass up the center of the field for Sadie Gearan (Lynnfield, Mass.), who dribbled past the goalie and scored on a backhand to even the score. The goal was her second of the season.

Wesleyan scored again before the end of the quarter, and then added a goal in the second period to lead 3-1 at intermission. The Cardinals appeared to add a fourth tally with 1:40 left in the half, but a video review wiped the score off the board.

Conn couldn't cut into the deficit in the second half as Wesleyan bumped the margin to 5-1 in the third. The Camels produced several scoring chances at the end of the period, beginning with a pass from Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) that Sadak nearly deflected into the cage. The visitors then earned a penalty corner in the final seconds of the frame, but the Cardinals denied Gearan on a pair of shot attempts to escape the flurry.

After Wesleyan added a goal in the fourth quarter to go up by five, the Camels ended the season on a high note as Sophia Stevens (Shelburne, Vt.) found the back of the cage with 1:17 to go. Playing in her final collegiate game, Stevens notched her first career goal with a backhanded flick over the Wesleyan goalie.

Conn goalie Isabella Carnall (Malvern, Pa.) faced 26 shots on the night and finished with nine saves in the loss. The rookie netminder played every minute in goal this season and recorded 87 saves over 15 games.

Conn ended the season with an overall record of 6-9 overall (1-9 NESCAC) under first-year head coach Ryley van der Velde. The Camels matched their win total from a season ago and went unbeaten in non-conference play for the first time since 2011.
