NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Connecticut College men's soccer team learned today that it will play host to an opening weekend of the NCAA Division III Tournament when selections were announced for the 64-team annual event earlier this afternoon.
Conn, which will play Saint Joseph (Conn.) in the opening round on Saturday, November 15 at 11 a.m. on Freeman Field, earned at-large selection after falling to No. 1 Tufts 1-0 in the NESCAC title game. Conn enters the NCAA tournament with an overall record of 10-3-5. For the year, Conn has scored 24 goals (1.33 per game) with 10 different goal scorers, while conceding just 12 goals in 18 games.
The national runners-up from last season have two players in double-digit scoring, led by Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) with 15 points on five goals and five assists, while Gavin Mpiana (Cape Town, South Africa) has added 10 points on four goals and two assists. Defensively, TJ Krongard (Montclair, N.J.) has started 17 of 18 games between the sticks for Conn, compiling a 0.786 save percentage, a 0.71 goals against average, and seven clean sheets.
Saint Joseph (Conn.) (13-4-2) is coming off a 3-2 win over Rivier in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship on November 8. The Blue Jays claimed their second straight GNAC title earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Mario Milardo leads the team with 28 points on 11 goals and six assists, while Emmanuel Ofori has added 23 points (9g, 5a), and goalkeeper Will Slayton has a 1.07 goals against average and seven shutouts in 17 starts.
The site's other first round match-up features SUNY Oneonta (12-4-4) against Babson (10-6-4). The winners from each first round contest will meet on Sunday, November 16.
