Perugini's Two Goals Powers Men's Soccer Past Babson into Sweet 16

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) converted two penalty kicks to lift the Connecticut College men's soccer team defeated Babson 2-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon from Freeman Field. With the win, Conn moves on to the second weekend for the third consecutive season.

It was a slow opening 10 minutes as both sides felt each other out. However, it was Conn that opened the scoring in the 14th minute after Albion Bacaj was called for a foul on Max Haberman (San Diego, Calif.) in the box, giving the Camels a penalty kick. Perugini stepped up to the spot and delivered a shot right down the middle to make it 1-0 at 13:44.

Babson responded with some pressure, but Conn held strong. However, in the 28th minute the Beavers found the equalizer. Huey Miller played a ball into the box that Alexander Yablonovskiy controlled before firing home to make it 1-1. Neither side was able to retake the lead before the end of the half, as the game was 1-1 at the break.

The wind and rain picked up in the second half, as the game became a slog in the midfield. Both sides were able to generate two shots in the opening 35 minutes, as Chase Corcoran (Lincoln, R.I.) came closest to giving Conn the lead.

However, with just under 10 minutes remaining, Corcoran was taken down in the box by Bacaj, giving the Camels another penalty kick. Perugini once again stepped up to the spot, this time going high to his left, putting Conn in front 2-1. Babson earned a free-kick on the edge of the Conn box with five minutes remaining, but Yablonovskiy's shot was blocked. The Camels closed out the final minutes to earn the hard-fought 2-1 victory.

Conn outshot Babson 20-9, including 9-4 on shots on goal, while holding a 5-0 edge on corner kicks.

TJ Krongard (Montclair, N.J.) picked up the win in net, finishing with three saves. Perugini led the Camels, tallying both goals, while six other Camels recorded one shot on goal.

JB Montague got the start in goal, making seven saves. Yablonovskiy notched the lone Beavers goal, while Miller chipped in an assist

Conn (12-3-5, 4-2-4 NESCAC) will take on NESCAC foe Bowdoin in the Sweet 16 next weekend at a time, place, and day to be determined.
