WBB Tops St. Lawrence, Advances to Hampton Classic Title Game

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team picked up a 62-48 victory over St. Lawrence University on Friday night in the opening round of the 2025 Hampton Inn Holiday Classic at the Anthony S. Caprio Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Sofia Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) came off the bench to lead the Camels with 20 points and also added five rebounds, three steals and two assists in 28 minutes of action. She is the first Conn player to score 20 points or more in consecutive games since the 2019-20 season, having netted 27 last time out against WPI.

The Camels, who shot 50 percent as a team, also got solid offensive contributions from Catherine Cole (Lebanon, N.H.) and Sydney Marshall (Enfield, Conn.). Cole contributed 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting while Marshall chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Hayle Thompson (Maynard, Mass.) led the effort on the glass with a season-high 13 boards.

Conn outscored St. Lawrence in all four quarters and led 33-27 at intermission. A 9-0 run in the opening period put the Camels in front for good, and in the second quarter they widened the gap behind a 9-2 spurt. Tavarez, who led all scorers with 10 points at the break, scored all five first-half field goals on drives to the basket.

Conn extended the lead to double digits midway through the third quarter on a layup by Marshall. Tavarez followed with a triple to give the Camels a 45-31 advantage.

Leading by eight heading into the final period, the Camels opened the fourth with seven straight points to take their largest lead of the night at 54-39. The Saints later cut the deficit back to single digits with 3:19 to go, but Conn didn't allow another point the rest of the way.

The Camels outscored the Saints by a commanding 44-8 margin in the paint. St. Lawrence (3-1 overall) shot just 28 percent for the game and was led by Jackie Malley's 14 points.

Conn (2-2 overall) will face host Western New England University in the title game of the Hampton Inn Holiday Classic on Saturday, November 22 at 2:00 p.m.
