Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women's Hockey Skates to 1-1 Tie with #3 Amherst, Falls in Shootout

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) recorded 36 saves as the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team earned a 1-1 tie against No. 3 Amherst on Friday night from Dayton Arena.

Neither side generated much in the opening five minutes, but Conn was able to record the first shot of the game, as Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.) was stopped by Natalie Stott at 5:53. Amherst responded with the next four shots, but Galizio turned them aside. Both sides looked for the opening goal, but with time winding down it was the Camels that broke the ice. Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) kept the pick in at the blue line, before finding Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) in the corner, Seiple threw a pass to the backdoor, where Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) tapped it home to put Conn in front 1-0 after one.

The Camels had a couple of early chances to extend the lead in the second period, but both Sofia Donnelly (Ringwood, N.J.) and Burm were denied by Stott. The Mammoths upped the pressure looking for the tying goal, but Galizio and the Camels defense kept them at bay. Neither side found the back of the net down the stretch as Conn remained in front 1-0 heading to the third.

Amherst finally broke through after earning a power play just over three minutes into the period. Maeve Reynolds won a face-off back to Bea Flynn whose shot was redirected by Marie-Eve Marleau, tying the game at 3:52. Both teams upped the attack, looking to find the winning goal in regulation but both Galizio and Stott held strong as the game headed to overtime.

Amherst won the opening face-off of the extra session as Galizio came up with a stop on Gretchen Dann. The rebound fell to Burm who raced the other way, but was denied by a great defensive play from a backchecking Mammoth. Both teams recorded two more shots, as the game headed to the shootout. In the shootout, Amherst converted twice to come away with the shootout victory.

Amherst outshot Conn 37-22, while winning 34 of 53 face-offs.

Galizio was sharp in net, finishing with 36 saves. Burm paced the Camels with the lone tally, while Bonner and Seiple each chipped in one assist. Seiple led the way with eight face-off wins, while Emma Peterson (Westwood, Mass.) led the Camels with six blocked shots. Conn finished 0-1 on the power play and 1-2 on the penalty kill.

Stott got the start in net finishing with 21 saves. Marleau tallied the lone Mammoth goal, while Flynn and Reynolds each added one assist. Amherst finished 1-2 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty.

Conn (2-0-1, 2-0-1 NESCAC) wraps up the weekend series with Amherst tomorrow as the Camels host the Mammoths at 3:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
