WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped by the University of Hartford, suffering an 82-81 setback on Monday evening at Chase Family Arena.
The Camels led by three in the final minute but yielded a pair of offensive put-backs down the stretch to fall behind. The Hawks took the lead with 2.6 seconds left on the clock, and Conn had the ball stripped while trying to go the length of the floor to attempt a game-winning shot at the buzzer.
James LaFrance (Guilford, Conn.) led all scorers with 24 points, his sixth straight game with 20 or more points.
Dylan Watson (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) added 19 points and nine rebounds while
Elias Espinosa (Leonia, N.J.) tacked on 10 points and three steals.
Hartford led 39-36 after a competitive first half, and the teams continued to trade blows in the second. Watson put the Camels in front with a jump hook in the lane at the eight-minute mark, and the visitors played with the lead until Kyle Winters drilled a fade-away jumper with 2:10 to go.
LaFrance promptly laced a three to put the Camels back on top 78-76, and on Conn's next possession
Greg Cantwell (Glen Head, N.Y.) pulled up for a transition three to pad the lead to 81-78. Watson then followed with a defensive gem, denying Winters on a wide-open layup attempt by pinning his shot against the backboard.
The Hawks pounded the offensive glass in the final minute to score their final two field goals. Hartford missed a pair of threes before Joshua Petion scored on a put-back to cut the deficit to one with 40.7 seconds remaining. After the Camels failed to score on a pick-and-roll, Winters rebounded another missed three and dumped in the go-ahead bucket with 2.6 seconds to play.
Winters paced Hartford (7-4 overall) with 24 points on 8-for-16 shooting.
Conn (8-2 overall) will next play SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday, December 31 at 3:30 p.m. in the opening round of the Naismith Classic in Springfield, Mass.
