NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team used an explosive second half to secure an 88-69 victory over Anna Maria College on Wednesday night at Luce Field House.
Trailing 44-41 at the break, the Camels reeled off a 16-2 run in the opening 4:27 of the second half to take over the game.
James LaFrance (Guilford, Conn.) netted 16 of his game-high 23 points after intermission as Conn outscored Anna Maria 47-25 in the stanza.
LaFrance, who also finished with seven rebounds and six steals, was one of five Camels who scored in double figures on the night.
Dylan Watson (Mount Kisco, N.Y.),
Elias Espinosa (Leonia, N.J.) and
PJ Johnson Jr. (Marietta, Ga.) added 14 points apiece while
Garrett Clar (Victor, N.Y.) chipped in 11.
Conn shot just 33 percent from the floor and 17 percent from deep in the first half. Watson kept the Camels close by netting all 14 of his points before halftime, 10 of which came from the free throw line. On the other end of the floor, AMC's Lucas Miglionico led all scorers with 16 points at the break.
Johnson provided the spark in the second half, converting a layup on Conn's opening possession and then a go-ahead three on the next. LaFrance and Espinosa also supplied triples during the spurt, and a tip-in by Johnson pumped the lead to double digits with 15:33 to play.
Anna Maria never recovered and trailed by as many as 20 before the final buzzer. The Camels held Miglionico scoreless in the second half, and the AMCATS (1-6 overall) shot just 10-for-26 from the floor over the final 20 minutes.
Watson and Johnson each grabbed 10 rebounds to record their first double-doubles of the season. Conn finished with a 52-39 edge on the glass that included a season-high 19 offensive boards.
Conn (5-1 overall) will next play at SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday, December 6 at 1:00 p.m.
