FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team came away with a 73-72 buzzer-beater win over Framingham State University on Wednesday night at Logan Gymnasium.
Sofia Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) supplied the game-winning bucket as time expired, sinking a running jumper from the left elbow to send the Camels sideline into celebration. The basket capped a wild finish in which the lead changed hands five times over the final 23.4 seconds of game time.
Tavarez finished with 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting and also handed out a pair of assists.
Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) led all scorers with a season-high 19 points and shot 5-for-7 from three-point range, and
Hayle Thompson (Maynard, Mass.) added eight points and a season-high 13 rebounds.
Conn trailed 36-29 at intermission but made up for it with a monster third quarter. The Camels outscored the Rams 22-12 and took a 51-48 lead into the final period. Xerras hit three triples and netted 11 points in the quarter to lead the charge.
The Camels led by six with 4:27 left in the game before the Rams clawed back to even the score at 65-65 with 2:48 to go. Later, a three by Kiara Cerruti gave Framingham State its first lead of the quarter at 68-67 with 1:45 remaining.
Conn pulled ahead on a putback by Thompson with 25.6 seconds left on the clock, but a foul on the other end gave the Rams two free throws and the lead. After a timeout, the Camels gave the ball to Tavarez, who Euro-stepped her way to a go-ahead bucket with 7.4 seconds to play.
The Rams called a timeout to advance the ball, and on the ensuing inbounds play, Cerruti drilled a step-back jumper for a 72-71 advantage with 3.4 seconds to go. Another Conn timeout brought the ball to center court for the final play, setting the stage for Tavarez's dramatic finish in the lane.
Conn (5-3 overall) will next play at Salve Regina University on Saturday, December 6 at 1:00 p.m.
