NEW LONDON, Conn. – Reece Cordray (Verona, Wis.) scored the decisive shootout goal, as the Connecticut College men's hockey team tied #13 Bowdoin 2-2 through regulation and overtime, before winning the shootout 3-2 on Friday night from Dayton Arena.
The teams traded chances early, as both sides put two shots on goal in the opening five minutes. Both goalies continued to look sharp through much of the period, but Conn opened the scoring at 17:33. Steve Ardagna (Roswell, Ga.) had a shot stopped by Jacob Osborne, but Quinn Kennedy (Silver Spring, Md.) picked up the rebound before finding Shane Zarcone (Huntington, N.Y.) who fired home to put Conn in front 1-0 after one.
The teams traded chances early in the middle frame, but the Camels were able to double the advantage at 5:26. Will Lawrence (Bethesda, Md.) had his shot blocked, but the rebound fell right to Will Tripp on the back door, who tapped it home to make it 2-0. Bowdoin upped the pressure looking to get back into the game, but Will McEvoy (Ottawa, Ontario) kept the Polar Bears at bay. However, with just five minutes remaining, Bowdoin got on the board as Louie Marcellino tipped home a shot from Pierre Larocque to make it 2-1 heading to the third.
The Polar Bears started the final period strong, looking to even the score, earning an early power play. However, with Bowdoin on the man advantage, McEvoy kept the Camels in front. Bowdoin eventually found the tying goal midway through the period, as Jayson Alegria found a loose puck in the slot, firing home to make it 2-2. Neither side was able to find the winning goal during the rest of regulation as the game headed to overtime.
Conn had the first two chances in the extra session, but Ardagna and Cordray were denied by Osborne. Bowdoin responded with two straight shots, but McEvoy came up with the saves, before Logan Cleary (Mentor, Ohio) had the last chance of overtime, but was turned aside, sending the game to the shootout.
Cleary got the shootout started finding the back of the net, before Finnigan Burke answered for Bowdoin. Lawrence put the Camels back in front, but again the Polar Bears answered, thanks to Alegria, setting the stage for Cordray. Cordray came down the right wing wall, cutting across the goal and firing past the glove of Osborne to make it 3-2. Bowdoin had one last chance to tie it, but Jackson Holl hit the post, as Conn picked up the extra point.
Bowdoin outshot Conn 32-28, while the Polar Bears held a 43-39 edge on face-off wins.
McEvoy was sharp in goal, finishing with 30 saves. Kennedy led the way with two assists, while Tripp and Zarcone both tallied one goal, and Ardagna and Lawrence each chipped in one assist. Cleary and Arty Mirante (Garden City, N.Y.) both won 10 face-offs as Conn went 3-3 on the penalty kill and 0-1 on the power play.
Osborne got the start in goal, recording 26 saves. Alegria and Marcellino both recorded a goal, as Isaac Abbott and Larocque picked up one assist each. Bowdoin finished 0-3 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill.
Conn (3-3-1, 1-3-1 NESCAC) wraps up 2025 tomorrow afternoon as the Camels host Colby at 3:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
