Men's Basketball Shoots Past Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team made 14 three-pointers en route to a 95-85 victory over Worcester State University on Monday night at Brissette Court.

James LaFrance (Guilford, Conn.) and Elias Espinosa (Leonia, N.J) combined for 37 points and seven threes in the first half as the Camels took a commanding 54-36 lead into the break. Conn cooled off from beyond the arc in the second half but never let the lead dip below seven.

LaFrance finished with a game- and season-high 28 points on 10-for-20 shooting that included five triples. Espinosa added a season-best 22 points on 7-for-16 shooting and also drained five treys.

Three other Camels also scored in double digits on the night. Greg Cantwell (Glen Head, N.Y.) chipped in 15 points while Dylan Watson (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) added 14, and both finished with nine rebounds apiece. PJ Johnson Jr. (Marietta, Ga.) rounded out the group with a season-high 14 points and handed out three assists.

The offense went through LaFrance and Espinosa at the start of the game, as the duo rattled off Conn's first 16 points. A three by Espinosa ignited a 15-0 run that saw Conn's lead balloon to 26-9 following a triple by LaFrance with 12:55 left in the half.

The Camels continued to stroke it from deep and finished 10-for-18 from long range in the stanza. Espinosa led the aerial assault with a 4-for-5 effort while LaFrance went 3-for-8, and Cantwell made both of his attempts in the half.

In the second half, the Lancers cut the deficit to single digits on three occasions, only to see a prompt response from the Camels each time. Midway through the stanza, when Worcester State whittled the margin to seven, Johnson fired back with a three-point play to right the ship. Minutes later, after the hosts clawed back to within eight, LaFrance drilled a straight-away three to give Conn an 83-72 edge.

With the Camels leading by 10, Espinosa missed a corner three with 5:15 to go but hustled down the floor to make a steal on the defensive end. His momentum carried him out of bounds, but not before he whipped a no-look pass behind his head to a teammate, and the resulting fast break yielded a dunk for Watson that helped seal the victory.

The Lancers (1-7 overall) never got closer than 10 the rest of the way. Johnny Annan finished with 27 points on 10-for-11 shooting to lead Worcester State.

Conn (7-1 overall) will next host Rhode Island College on Friday, December 19 at 3:00 p.m.
