NEW LONDON, Conn. – A balanced offensive attack led the Connecticut College women's basketball team to a 66-44 victory over the United States Coast Guard Academy on Monday evening at Luce Field House.
A total of 11 Camels contributed points against their New London neighbor, led by a game-high 12 points from
Catherine Cole (Lebanon, N.H.).
Sofia Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) added 11 points and five assists off the bench, and
Sydney Marshall (Enfield, Conn.) chipped in seven points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Coast Guard shot just 25 percent for the game and went 2-for-17 from three-point range. Olivia Wright paced the Bears (4-4 overall) with 12 points.
After getting out to a 6-0 lead, Conn fell behind only once following a layup by Pauli Georgia that gave Coast Guard a 9-8 advantage. The Camels took the lead for good on a three by Tavarez with 2:20 left in the period, and later added the final six points of the stanza to lead 17-11 after one.
Conn got the better of a low-scoring second quarter, holding Coast Guard without a field goal (0-for-12) for the entire period. The Camels went into the locker room with a 27-17 lead at the break as Cole led all players with nine points.
Marshall scored on back-to-back possessions to open the second-half scoring, setting the tone for the second half. The Camels outscored the Bears 20-14 in the third quarter and led by 16 heading into the fourth. Conn took its largest lead of the night at 66-42 on a three-pointer by
Lusine Hagopian (North Providence, R.I.) in the final minutes of the contest.
The Camels shot 40 percent as a team and went 8-for-26 from long range, with Cole and
Addi Hunter (Saint George, Vt.) each contributing a pair of triples. On the defensive end,
Hayle Thompson (Maynard, Mass.) supplied four of Conn's season-high eight blocks.
Conn (6-4 overall) will next host Babson College on January 3 at 1:00 p.m.
