NEW LONDON, Conn. – Jack Luca (Milton, Mass.) scored the lone goal in the shootout, as the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team earned the extra point after skating to a 2-2 tie with Colby on Saturday afternoon from Dayton Arena. Conn moves to 9-13-2 overall and 7-10-1 in conference play, while Colby moves to 13-5-6 overall and 8-5-5 in NESCAC action.
Colby dominated the opening 20 minutes, aided by three penalties on Conn. The first power play for the Mules came just a minute and a half into the contest, but the Camels were able to shut it down, as Will McEvoy (Ottawa, Ontario) stopped the only shot. Conn answered with their first shot from Will Murphy (Franklin, Mass.) at the four minute mark but Cooper Rautenstrauch made the save. Colby continued to pressure, earning a five-minute power play, but McEvoy and the Camels held strong as the game was scoreless after one.
Conn opened the second period with a power play, but the Camels were unable to convert with the man-advantage. The teams traded chances for the remainder of the period, but McEvoy and Rautenstrauch kept the game scoreless heading to the third.
The offenses came to life in the final period, as Colby opened the scoring off a tally from Will Soloway at 5:08. However, just 39 seconds later, Conn answered. Devan Newhook (St. John's, Newfoundland) laid off a pass to Matt Lewis (Pembroke, Mass.) finding Andrew Eberling (Mount Laurel, N.J.) in the high slot. Eberling snapped a shot over the blocker of Rautenstrauch to even the game.
With five and a half minutes remaining, the Camels took their first lead. John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) found Luca who had two shots stopped, however the rebound fell to Will Lawrence (Bethesda, Md.) who fired into an open cage as Rautenstrauch slid out of position to make it 2-1. The Mules did not go away quietly, as Colby pulled Rautenstrauch with a minute and a half left. The Mules were able to tie the score as Soloway notched his second goal of the afternoon, sending the game to overtime.
Both teams had chances in the extra session, but the lionshare fell to Colby, who forced another five saves from McEvoy, sending the game to the shootout. Both sides missed their shots in the first round, before McEvoy came up with a second save. Luca was the next to shoot for Conn, using some nifty stickhandling to beat Raustenstrauch to put the Camels in front. McEvoy added one more save in the third round, as Conn picked up the extra point with the 1-0 shootout win.
Colby outshot Conn 51-25, while holding a 36-32 edge on face-off wins.
McEvoy was rock solid in net, finishing with 49 saves, before adding another three in the shootout. Eberling and Lewis both notched one goal, while Lewis, Luca, Newhook, and Russo all picked up one assist. Russo led the way in the face-off circle, winning 17 draws, as Conn went 4-4 on the penalty kill and 0-1 on the power play.
Raustenstrauch finished with 23 saves in goal. Soloway paced the Mules with two goals, while Colby went 0-4 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill.
