MALDEN, Mass. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team fell to host Tufts University 4-0 on Saturday afternoon from Malden Valley Forum. With the loss, Conn falls to 7-12-1 overall and 5-9 in conference play, while Tufts improves to 8-10-1 on the year and 6-8 in NESCAC action.
Tufts opened the game on the front foot, recording the first four shots of the contest, but Will McEvoy (Ottawa, Ontario) looked sharp early. Will Lawrence (Bethesda, Md.) got the first shot for Conn at the four minute mark, but he was turned aside by Gus Bylin. The teams traded chances for the remainder of the period, but the game stayed scoreless after one.
The game opened up in the second period, as both sides created numerous good looks. Midway through the period, the Camels were able to keep the Jumbos hemmed in their own zone, but were unable to beat Bylin. Tufts answered with pressure themselves, and opened the scoring with 3:47 remaining. McEvoy stopped the initial shot from Chris Throndson, but Brennan Horn poked home the rebound to make it 1-0 heading to the third.
Tufts doubled the lead just over a minute into the period, as Harrison Bazianos made it 2-0 at 18:54. Conn upped the pressure looking to cut the deficit in half, but continued to be stoned by Bylin. With just under seven minutes remaining, the Jumbos pushed the lead to 3-0, as Marcus Snag found the back of the net. Conn pulled McEvoy for the extra skater with three minutes remaining, however, Brendan Fennell potted one into the empty net to give Tufts the 4-0 win.
Tufts outshot Conn 39-25, while winning 45 of 81 face-offs.
McEvoy got the start in net again, finishing with 35 saves. Lawrence paced Conn with five shots, while Matt Lewis (Pembroke, Mass.) added three. John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) led the way in the circle winning 15 draws, while Conn finished 1-1 on the penalty kill and 0-2 on the power play.
Bylin got the win in goal, finishing with 25 saves. Bazianos and Horn paced the Jumbos with three points on one goal and two assists each, while Sang added one goal and one assist. Tufts finished 0-1 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.
Conn continues their road trip next weekend, as the Camels travel to Amherst, Mass. to take on Amherst at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night.
