Box Score 2 ERIE, Pa. - The Connecticut College women's water polo team traveled to Erie, Pa. going 1-3 in four games across the weekend.
GAME 1: Grove City 12, Conn 8
Conn opened the scoring two minutes into the contest, as Melia Lorch (Encinitas, Calif.) got the Camels on the board. Grove City answered, ending the opening quarter on a 3-0 run to lead 3-1 after one. The Wolverines run continued to start the second quarter, with three more goals, extending the lead to 6-1. Emma Luna (Wahiawa, Hawaii) ended the run with a minute and a half left in the quarter, but Grove City added three more goals to lead 9-2 at the break.
The scoring slowed back down in the third quarter as the teams combined for just four goals. Both goals for the Camels came from Luna, who completed her hat trick, as Conn trailed 11-4 heading to the fourth. Conn's offense came to life in the final quarter. After the Wolverines pushed the lead to 12-4, the Cames answered with four straight goals, two more from Luna, and a goal apiece from Ainsley Cornwall (San Mateo, Calif.) and Sarah Nagel (Honolulu, Hawaii) to make it 12-8. Unfortunately, that was as close as Conn got as time ran out on the Camels.
GAME 2: Conn 15, Wheaton 2
Conn rebounded in the second game on Saturday, cruising past Wheaton for a 15-2 win. The Camels jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. During the dominant opening quarter, Cornwall recorded four goals, while Maddie Baybeck (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Lorch, and Nagel all chipped in one goal. Conn continued their strong play in the second quarter, as Nagel tallied three goals in the frame, while Jada Keen (Kealakekua, Hawaii) found the back of the net, as the Camels led 11-1 at the half.
The scoring slowed down in the second half, as the teams combined for just five goals in the final 16 minutes. Wheaton opened the third quarter with a tally to make it 11-2, but Nagel and Catrina Dumas (San Francisco, Calif.) each scored one to make it 13-2 heading to the fourth. Luna and Baybeck both notched one goal in the final quarter, as Conn earned the 15-2 win.
GAME 3: W&J 17, Conn 8
The first game on Sunday started as a back-and-forth affair. Washington and Jefferson opened the scoring just 30 seconds in, but Conn answered 30 seconds later off a tally from Cornwall. The Presidents responded with two goals to take a 3-1 lead before Lorch made it 3-2. W&J pushed the lead to 4-2, but Baybeck and Nagel went back-to-back to even the game at four after one. The Presidents outscored the Camels 7-1 in the second quarter, with the lone Conn goal coming from Luna, as W&J led 11-5 at the half.Â
Lorch opened up the second half with an early marker to cut the deficit to 11-6. However, W&J scored the last two goals in the quarter to lead 13-6 heading to the fourth. Luna cut into the Presidents' advantage with an early marker in the final frame, but four straight goals from W&J to end the contest gave the Presidents the 17-8 win.
GAME 4: PSB 13, CC 8
The final game for Conn started like the previous, as the opening quarter went back-and-forth. Cornwall opened the scoring, before PSB answered with three straight to take a 3-1 lead. The Camels answered with three straight themselves, as Cornwall, Lorch, and Luna each found the back of the net as Conn led 4-3 after one. The Lions answered with a 3-0 run to start the second quarter to move back in front 6-4. Luna ended the run, but another tally from PSB had the Lions leading 7-5 at the break.
Luna cut the deficit to one early in the third quarter, but back-to-back goals for PSB pushed the lead to 9-6. The teams traded the next four goals, with both Lorch and Luna adding one tally, as the Lions led 11-8 heading to the fourth. Both defenses stepped up their game in the final quarter, as PSB scored the only two goals of the frame to come away with the 13-8 win.
Conn returns to action on March 20, as the Camels travel to Norton, Mass. to take on Wheaton at 7:00 p.m.
