HARTFORD, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team used a dominant second half to push past Trinity College, 10-7, Wednesday night in a NESCAC showdown at Jessee/Miller Field.
The Camels controlled the pace of play in the second half, outscoring the Bantams by an 8-4 margin to snap Trinity's six-game win streak. Conn commanded time of possession behind a 10-for-14 effort from the face-off spot and outshot its host by a 17-7 count over the final 30 minutes.
Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.) turned in his second six-goal game of the season and also added an assist on the night to lead Conn's attack.
Will Vivian (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and
Patrick Hogan (Wyckoff, N.J.) combined to make five saves in goal.
Horkan scored a pair of goals in the opening quarter, but Conn still found itself trailing 3-2 at intermission. His third tally kicked off the scoring in the second half, tying the game with a man-up marker a little more than four minutes into the stanza.
Just over three minutes later, the Camels took their first lead of the game when
JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) found a cutting
Cole Ronan (Northport, N.Y.) in the middle of the Trinity defense. Ronan bounced off a defender before unleashing a shot from 10 yards out to put the visitors on top 4-3.
The Bantams added a score before the end of the third, and the game went into the final period tied at 4-4. Ford put Conn back on top less than a minute into the fourth by dodging a defender and beating the goalie. Nearly a minute later,
Aidan McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) was fed by Horkan on a cut from behind the cage and scored easily to provide a two-goal cushion.
After Trinity cut the deficit to 6-5, the Camels put the game out of reach with four straight goals over a four-minute stretch.
Aidan McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) split a pair of defenders with a pass for Horkan that yielded a wide-open look and finish, and on the ensuing face-off
Nick McLaughlin (Wilbraham, Mass.) scooped up a ground ball and fed Horkan for another quick score.
Graydon Diamond (New Canaan, Conn.) added an unassisted tally at the 6:01 mark, and Horkan netted his third goal of the spurt with a walk-in goal off a feed from
Zach Bucher (Verona, N.J.) to make it 10-5.
The Bantams added a pair of scores in the final 2:43 but couldn't make up the difference. Jay Ottomanelli led Trinity (7-3 overall, 2-3 NESCAC) with two goals and a pair of assists on the night.
Noah Macielag (Rock Hall, Md.) went 11-for-15 at the face-off spot and grabbed a game-high six ground balls for the Camels. McLaughlin and Ronan paced the defense with two caused turnovers apiece.
Conn (5-4 overall, 2-4 NESCAC) will next host Bates College on Saturday, April 5 at 1:00 p.m.
