Women's Lax Stumped by Bates on Saturday

LEWISTON, Maine. – The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team hit the road, falling to host Bates 18-11 on Saturday from Garcelon field. With the loss, Conn falls to 6-6 overall and 1-6 in NESCAC play, while Bates improves to 7-5 on the year and 3-4 in conference action.

Bates started quickly, jumping out to a 2-0 lead just three minutes in off goals from Lauren Wong and Laci Raveis. Conn got on the board just over a minute later, as Kate Coughlin (Reading, Mass.) fired home. Two minutes later, Campbell Johnston (Duxbury, Mass.) connected with Aine Downey (Brookline, Mass.) who evened the score. The Bobcats responded ending the opening quarter on a 4-0 run to lead 6-2 after one.

Conn ended the run 39 seconds into the second quarter, as Johnston converted with the Camels playing a woman-up. Bates answered with four straight free-position goals to extend the lead to 10-3 with 1:35 to play. Johnston beat the buzzer for her second goal of the game, as the Camels trailed 10-4 at the half.

Johnston found Coughlin in front for a goal less than a minute into the second half, cutting the deficit to 10-5. Bates countered two minutes later, before Johnston and Downey scored back-to-back making it 11-7 with 10:24 to play. The Bobcats tallied the last two goals in the quarter, taking a 13-7 lead into the final frame.

Bates pushed the lead to seven with an early goal on a woman-up opportunity, but just 30 seconds later, with the Camels a woman-down, Johnston fed Downey for her third goal of the afternoon. The teams traded a goal a piece over the next minute and a half, as the Conn goal came from Emma Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.) off another assist from Johnston.

Conn had back-to-back chances to cut into the deficit more as the Camels earned two straight free-position shots, but they were unable to capitalize. The Bobcats were able to push the lead back to seven at 7:53 off a tally from Raveis. Bates added another goal before two quickfire goals from Coughlin and Johnston made it 17-11. The Bobcats notched one more goal in the dying seconds to come away with the 18-11 win.

Bates outshot Conn 32-29, while the Camels held a 17-15 edge on draw controls.

Ava Virga (Watertown, N.Y.) got the start in the cage, finishing with seven saves. Johnston paced Conn with a career day, tallying eight points on four goals and four assists. Coughlin and Downey both added three goals, while Ognibene chipped in one.

Defensively, Eliza Shamah (Acton, Mass.) caused a team-high three turnovers, while Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) added two. Conn scooped up 19 ground balls as a team, with Coughlin and Virga both scooping up three. Sydney Weber (Hanover, Mass.) led the way with six draw controls, while Downey and Great Panke (Milldale, Conn.) both collected four.

Raegan White got the win in the cage, finishing with seven saves in 46 minutes, before Molly Urbonas closed out the game recording four saves. Lucy Taylore paced Bates with six points, while five other Bobcats recorded multiple points.

Conn returns to action on Wednesday night, as the Camels host No. 12 Amherst at 7:00 p.m. on Silfen Field.
