Men's LAX Can't Catch No. 8 Amherst in Second Half

AMHERST, Mass. – The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team fell by a 13-9 final against No. 8 Amherst College on Wednesday night at Gooding Field.

The Mammoths led by a single goal at intermission but outscored the Camels 7-4 in the second half to improve to 8-2 overall (5-2 NESCAC). Bennett Chow led the offensive effort with two goals and an assist, one of nine Amherst goal scorers in the contest.

Aidan McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) and JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) each netted a pair of goals to lead the Camels. McAvoy also added two assists, and goalie Patrick Hogan (Wyckoff, N.J.) finished with nine saves.

Conn fell behind 5-2 in the opening quarter, but goals by Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.) and Andrew Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) kept the Camels within striking distance. The tide changed in the second quarter, when a pair of scores by McAvoy helped cut the deficit to 6-5 by the break.

The Mammoths built a cushion in the third quarter as Willie Doyle scored twice, extending their margin to 11-7 heading into the final period. Amherst then won all five face-offs in the fourth quarter and yielded only two more goals to protect the lead.

Myles Newport (Oakville, Ontario), Patrick Atkins (Topsfield, Mass.) and Graydon Diamond (New Canaan, Conn.) all scored in the second half for the Camels, and Ford notched his second goal in the final minute. Chris Travers (Mill Valley, Calif.) paced the defense with seven ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Conn (5-6 overall, 2-6 NESCAC) will next play Grove City College on Saturday, April 12 at 5 p.m. The game will be played at Tierney Field in Sparks, Md.
