Camels Honored at 2025 Senior Athletic Awards Reception

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Women's ice hockey player Claire Sammons and men's swimmer Justin Finkel were among the student-athletes who were presented with major awards at the 2025 Connecticut College Senior Athletic Awards Reception last week.
 
The event, which was held Friday evening in Evans Hall, celebrated the achievements of the senior class over the past four years. In addition to Sammons and Finkel, other major awards were given to Aine Downey (women's lacrosse), Peter Silvester (men's soccer) and Rye Jaran (men's soccer). Members of the Connecticut College grounds crew were also honored for their service to the department, along with senior leaders Catie Donadio (women's basketball), Amanda Kreidler (volleyball) and Henrietta Waltz (women's tennis) for their work within Conn's chapter of The Hidden Opponent.

A total of 122 student-athletes were honored on the evening. All seniors in attendance received athletics honor cords for graduation, along with a special gift.

Connecticut College Major Award Winners
 
Anita L. DeFrantz Award (Top Female Student-Athlete): Claire Sammons
Established in 1995 by Kathryn Smith '84 and given to the female member of the graduating class whose athletic ability, leadership, and sportsmanship best exemplify the qualities of Olympic medalist Anita L. DeFrantz '74.
 
Anita L. DeFrantz Award (Top Male Student-Athlete): Justin Finkel
Established in 1995 by Kathryn Smith '84 and given to the male member of the graduating class whose athletic ability, leadership, and sportsmanship best exemplify the qualities of Olympic medalist Anita L. DeFrantz '74.
 
Brown/Brooks Award (Top Female Scholar-Athlete): Aine Downey
Established by the class of 1984 and given to the outstanding female student-athlete who best represents the graduating class in scholarship, leadership, and sportsmanship.
 
Brown/Brooks Award (Top Male Scholar-Athlete): Peter Silvester
Established by the class of 1984 and given to the outstanding male student-athlete who best represents the graduating class in scholarship, leadership, and sportsmanship.
 
Erica M. Bos Award (Inspiration): Rye Jaran
Established in 1990 to honor an athlete whose courage, motivation, and relentless determination serve as an inspiration to others.
 
Andrew H. Chait Award (Service): Connecticut College Grounds Crew; senior leadership group from The Hidden Opponent (Catie Donadio, Amanda Kreidler, Henrietta Waltz)
Established in 1986 to honor a member of the College community who has shown outstanding service and commitment to the Connecticut College Department of Athletics.
