Box Score 4 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Connecticut College men's water polo team opened up the season, going 1-3 at the Navy Open.
GAME ONE: PSB 16, Conn 13
The teams traded the first four goals of the contest, with Zach Dixon (Wayne, Pa.) and Jesse Ellis (Fresno, Calif.) scoring for Conn, before two goals from Penn State Behrend had the Lions in front 4-2 after one. Thomas McDonough (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) notched two straight goals to even the score at four, but a late marker from the Lions had them in front 5-4 at the half.Â
Topher Cook (West Palm Beach, Fla.) tied the score at five early in the third quarter, before a 3-0 run from PSB made it 8-5. Jeffrey Harrington (San Diego, Calif.) ended the run, but four straight markers from the Lions made it 12-6 heading to the fourth. Conn outscored PSB 6-3 in the final quarter with two goals from Ellis, with Dixon, Artem Kyselov (Dnipro, Kyiv), Paul Podrebarac (Friendswood, Texas), and Adam Teryek (Hillsborough, N.J.) adding one goal. However, time ran out on the Camels as Conn fell 16-13.
GAME TWO: MSM 20, Conn 12
It was a slow start for both teams, as just two goals were scored in the opening quarter. Mount St. Mary's recorded both to lead 2-0 after the first. The Mount opened the second quarter with two more goals, before Carson Neidert (West Palm Beach, Fla.) got the Camels on the board. However, the Mount ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to lead 8-1 at the break.
Mount St. Mary's continued their run into the second half, pushing the lead to 11-1. Conn answered with four of the next six goals, with two goals coming from Podrebarac and one each from McDonough and Keegan Kosiba (Birmingham, Mich.), as the Camels trailed 13-5 heading to the fourth. The offenses picked up in the final quarter, as both teams combined to score 14 goals. The Camels got two goals from Dixon, Ellis, and McDonough, while Cook added the final goal, as Conn fell 20-12.
GAME THREE: Conn 21, Wheaton 7
Wheaton opened the scoring just 30 seconds in, but Conn responded with a 5-0 run to end the quarter. During the run, Cook, Dixon, Ellis, Kosiba, and Matthew Maischoss (Malibu, Calif.) all recorded one goal. Dixon extended the lead to 6-1 early in the second quarter, before the Lyons ended the run with a goal of their own. Harrington, Maischoss, and Neidert each added a goal, but Wheaton answered with two straight, before a late goal from Harrington had Conn in front 10-4 at the break.
The third quarter was back-and-forth. Podrebarac scored early to make it 11-4, but Wheaton answered with back-to-back markers to cut it to 11-6. Ellis and Kosiba combined for the next three goals, before another Lyons tally, but Sebastian Parilov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had the Camels in front 15-7 heading to the fourth. Conn dominated the final frame, outscoring Wheaton 6-0. Kosiba added four goals, while Cook and Dixon each chipped in one as Conn closed out the 21-7 win.
GAME FOUR: MIT 22, Conn 10
MIT started quickly jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first six minutes of the contest. Conn answered with the next three goals, spanning the end of the first quarter and into the second, as Ellis scored twice, while Harrington added the third. The Engineers answered back, ending the half on an 8-2 run. The final two goals for the Camels came from Ellis and Kosiba as Conn trailed 13-5 at the break.
The third quarter was even as both teams scored four goals. Dixon, Harrington, McDonough, and Parilov each tallied one goal as the Camels trailed 17-9 heading to the fourth. MIT opened the final quarter with a 4-0 run to push the lead to 21-9. Cook ended the run with a solo marker, before one more goal from the Engineers gave MIT the 22-10 win.
Conn returns to action on Saturday for three games in Providence, R.I. beginning against Pomona-Pitzer at 9:30 a.m.
