Weiss Lifts Men's Soccer Past Salve

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Max Weiss (Weston, Conn.) scored his first career goal to lead the Connecticut College men's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference win over Salve Regina on Tuesday afternoon from Freeman Field. Conn improves to 2-1-2 on the year, while Salve falls to 1-1-2.

Salve had the first shot of the contest just five minutes in, but TJ Krongard (Montclair, N.J.) came away with the routine save. 10 minutes later Conn got their first shot of the afternoon, as Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) was turned aside by Nick Giorgi.

Salve forced another save from Krongard, before the Camels thought they had a penalty in the 20th minute when Spatz was taken down by the keeper, but no call was made. Conn upped the pressure to end the half, but were unable to break the ice, as the game remained scoreless at the break.

Krongard came up with an early save in the second half to keep the game scoreless, before the Camels took over. Caleb Huang (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Spatz both had shots stopped by Giorgi, before Daniel Woodward's (Newton, Mass.) volley from the top of the box went wide.

Conn finally broke through with 18 minutes to play. Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) laid off a pass to Max Haberman (San Diego, Calif.) who played a perfect pass over the top into the path of Weiss, who fired home to put the Camels in front.

Seconds later, the lead nearly doubled as Kevin Hwong's (San Mateo, Calif.) shot towards the upper corner was tipped out for a corner kick. Conn closed out the final minutes to come away with the 1-0 victory.

Conn outshot Salve 12-5, holding a 5-4 edge on shots on target and 5-0 on corner kicks.

Krongard picked up the clean sheet in goal, finishing with four saves. Weiss notched his first career goal, while Haberman and Perugini both picked up the assists, as Spatz led the way with two shots on target.

Giorgi got the nod between the sticks for Salve finishing with four saves.

Conn returns to action on Saturday as the Camels host Colby at 2:00 p.m. on Freeman Field.
