Field Hockey Hangs Tough Against #7 Tufts

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Connecticut College field hockey team fought hard in a 2-1 loss against seventh-ranked Tufts University on Sunday afternoon in a NESCAC clash at Silfen Field.

A first-half goal by Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) gave the Camels the early lead, but the Jumbos responded with a pair of tallies before intermission to lead 2-1 at the break. Both teams had opportunities in the second half but couldn't cash in, as goalies Isabella Carnall (Malvern, Pa.) and Lydia Eastburn held steadfast.

Following a scoreless opening quarter in which they didn't attempt a shot, the Camels got on the scoreboard just 1:29 into the second period by converting a penalty corner. A deflection to the side of the cage was played along the goal line by Serena Moore (Houston, Texas), and Bonner was waiting on the doorstep to stuff in her fourth goal of the season.

Conn's lead didn't last for long, as nearly two minutes later the Jumbos capitalized on a penalty corner of their own. Sophie Brants inserted the ball to the top of the scoring circle, where Claire Casey sent a rocket through the defense that tucked into the lower-right corner of the goal.

Tufts pulled ahead with 7:19 left in the half when Hannah Murray took a pass on the wing and cut back to beat a defender, dribbling into open space before cashing in for her first goal of the season.

The Camels held tough in the second half, fending off 14 penalty corners—12 in the third quarter alone—to stay within striking distance. Conn's best chances at the equalizer came in the third quarter when both Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) and Reese Ziegler (Charlotte, N.C.) had shots denied on the same sequence.

Conn increased the pressure in the fourth quarter, drawing six penalty corners but to no avail. The final penalty corner came with 30 seconds left on the clock, and though the Camels loaded the offensive end, they couldn't find the game-tying goal.

Tufts held a 18-8 advantage in total shots and finished with a 21-10 edge in penalty corners. Eastburn made six saves in goal as the Jumbos improved to 5-2 overall (3-1 NESCAC) on the season. Carnall tied a season high with 11 stops for the Camels.

Conn (3-3 overall, 1-3 NESCAC) will next host Middlebury College on Saturday, September 27 at 11:00 a.m.
