Men's Soccer Comes up Short Against Tufts

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team fell short against visiting Tufts University, falling 2-1 on Sunday from Freeman Field.

It was a slow start for both teams, playing their second game in as many days, as neither side was able to put a shot on target in the opening 20 minutes. Conn put the first two efforts on net, as both Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) and Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) were stopped by Nikola Antic, as the game was scoreless at the break.

Tufts opened up the second half on the front foot as Daniel Yanez hit the crossbar 10 minutes in, before TJ Krongard (Montclair, N.J.) stopped Henry Brown on the rebound. However, it was the Jumbos who opened the scoring as Tufts was awarded a penalty kick in the 67th minute. Henry Perkins took the penalty and converted to make it 1-0.

The lead was short-lived though, as Conn went straight back down and earned a free kick from the edge of the box three minutes later. Perugini stepped up to the ball and delivered a curling shot around the Jumbos wall and into the far side to even the score at one.

Both teams pushed for the go-ahead goal, but neither side was able to find the breakthrough. However, with just under five minutes left, Tufts earned three straight corners, and on the third, James Flagg headed home to make it 2-1. The Camels pushed to find the equalizer, but time ran out as Conn fell 2-1.

Conn outshot Tufts 15-11, but the Jumbos held a 4-3 edge on shots on goal, and 6-5 advantage on corner kicks.

Krongard got the start in goal, finishing with two saves. Perugini led the way with two shots on target, including the lone Camels goal, while Spatz added one shot on net.

Antic got the win in net, finishing with two saves. Flagg and Perkins each scored a goal, with Yanez adding an assist.

Conn (2-2-3, 0-2-2 NESCAC) returns to action on Saturday as the Camels host Middlebury at 2:00 p.m. on Freeman Field.
