HARTFORD, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team battled through a delay and an early deficit to come away with a hardfought 2-2 draw against Trinity on Tuesday night from the Trinity Soccer Field.
Conn started quickly, recording the first two shots of the contest, but both Henry Lester (Southwest Harbor, Maine) and Matt Quiros-Newton (Alajuela, Costa Rica) were turned aside. Conn earned a free kick just under 13 minutes in, but as Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) stepped up, the lights went out, setting off a 20 minute delay.
With the lights back on, Perugini's free kick was blocked, and just a minute later, Trinity countered, as Tomas Ludvik made it 1-0. TJ Krongard (Montclair, N.J.) came up with two stops down the stretch of the half to keep the game 1-0, before the Camels equalized.
With just one minute left in the half, Perugini threaded a lovely pass into the path of Gavin Mpiana (Cape Town, South Africa). Mpiana corralled the ball and fired to the far post to even the score at one, heading to the break.
The Camels had an early look to take the lead in the second half, as Quiros-Newton was played in down the right sideline, but Nate Dyott came up with the save. However, just 16 minutes into the second half, Conn jumped in front. Perugini laid off a pass to Max Haberman (San Diego, Calif.) about 25 yards from goal, Haberman fired and curled a shot into the near post to make it 2-1.
The Camels had a couple of chances to extend the lead, but Haberman, Lester, and Charlie Riegel (Suffield, Conn.) were all stopped by Dyott. With just over five minutes remaining, Trinity earned back-to-back corner kicks. On the second corner, Trevor Saruwaka's cross was redirected by Jordan McCammon to even the score.
Mpiana nearly put Conn back in front in the dying moments, but his shot was cleared off the line by a Bantams defender. Neither side was able to find the winning goal, as the game ended in the 2-2 draw.
Conn outshot Trinity 19-13, including 9-5 on shots on target, while holding a slim 4-3 edge on corner kicks.
Krongard got the start in goal, finishing with two saves. Perugini paced the Camels' attack with two assists, while Haberman and Mpiana both tallied one goal.
Dyott got the nod in net, finishing with seven saves. McCammon and Ludvik led Trinity with a goal apiece, while three other Bantams tallied one assist.
Conn (3-2-3, 1-2-2 NESCAC) returns to action on Saturday, as the Camels travel to Providence, R.I. to take on Rhode Island College at 3:00 p.m.
