NEW LONDON, Conn. – The No. 21 Connecticut College men's swimming and diving team knocked off No. 18 Williams College by a 150-147 final on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC showdown at Lott Natatorium.
The Camels (5-0 overall) claimed their first-ever win over the Ephs behind a solid team effort. Conn nabbed 10 first-place finishes on the day and entered the meet's final event with a 148-132 lead. A third-place showing in the 200 free relay was all that was needed to sew up the historic victory.
Carrick Shea (Grafton, Mass.) paced the Camels with three individual wins and also contributed to the winning 200 medley relay squad.
Evan Lyons (Longmeadow, Mass.) also supplied a pair of wins on the day.
Conn got off to a strong start as the 200 medley relay squad of
Matthew Morris (Alexandria, Va.), Shea,
Nicholas Holovacs (Hingham, Mass.) and
Aiden Miller (Westfield, N.J.) got to the wall first in 1:34.56, besting the top Williams team by nearly three-tenths of a second. The Camels kept the momentum with wins in the next three events—Lyons in the 1,650 free (16:23.60), Miller in the 200 free (1:44.06) and Morris in the 100 back (51.95)—to open up a 49-25 advantage.
After the Ephs made up ground in the 100 breast and 200 fly, Shea bolstered the Camels through the midway point of the meet. His first solo victory came in the 50 free (20.98) where he was the only competitor to break the 21-second mark. He then cruised to victory in the 100 free (46.25), winning by more than a second.
Julian Carlson (Brookline, Mass.) kept the Camels going with a win in the 200 breast (2:08.15), and Lyons added his second victory in the 500 free (4:44.73).
Cam Bizjak (Willoughby, Ohio) secured big points on the boards, finishing first in the 1M (300.89) and second in the 3M (297.60).
Conn nabbed 13 of 19 points in the 200 IM to take a 16-point lead into the final relay. Shea clocked in with the winning time (1:54.45) while
Ryan Karaca (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Lyons placed third and fifth, respectively.
Prior to the start of the meet, the Camels honored Morris—their lone senior—in a special ceremony. Four members of the women's team were also recognized, as the seniors took part in the final home meet of their careers.
Conn returns to the pool at Colby College on Monday, January 19 at 1:00 p.m.
