NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with an 88-50 victory over the City College of New York on Tuesday night at Luce Field House.
All 19 Camels saw the floor on a night where the reserves did the heavy lifting. Conn's bench outscored CCNY's by a 50-0 margin, with
Quron Zene Jr. (Windsor, Conn.) leading the way with 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting in 13 minutes.
RJ Casey (Nashville, Tenn.) finished with 10 points and four rebounds, and
PJ Johnson Jr. (Marietta, Ga.) added nine points and a game-high eight assists.
Cole Craffey (Easton, Mass.) chipped in eight points and five boards while
Martin Wilson (Roxbury, Mass.) notched career highs with seven points, three rebounds and two steals.
CCNY got off to a fast start behind the play of David Leye, who accounted for his team's first 11 points of the contest. He made three shots in the opening two minutes to stake the Beavers a 7-2 lead, but that quickly disappeared once the Camels got going. Conn scored on three straight possessions—a dunk by
Dylan Watson (Mount Kisco, N.Y.), a layup by
Greg Cantwell (Glen Head, N.Y.) and a three by
Elias Espinosa (Leonia, N.J.)—to pull in front.
After the starters took a seat just four minutes into the game, Conn's bench went right to work. The Camels outscored the Beavers 30-4 over the next 9:47 of game time to seize control, with Johnson and Craffey combining for 17 points in the stretch.
Conn led 50-31 by the end of the half. The Camels shot 53 percent in the stanza and went 12-for-17 from inside the arc. CCNY shot 46 percent from the floor but turned the ball over 10 times.
The Camels scored the first 11 points of the second half and never looked back, building the lead to as many as 39 before the final buzzer.
Alden Doran (Belgrade, Maine),
Josiah Wright (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and
Will Phillips (Watchung, N.J.) all supplied dunks in the second half, and
Robert Blandburg (Kilgore, Texas) finished off a pretty alley-oop from
Jay Royal (Denver, Colo.) for the highlight of the night.
Conn shot 10-for-32 from beyond the arc, led by three triples from Casey and a pair by Johnson.
Bo Moody (Medford, Mass.) and
Malcolm Albert (Seattle, Wash.) also cashed in from deep.
Wright led the Camels on the glass with a game-high 10 rebounds. Conn finished with a 50-19 advantage on the boards and allowed only one offensive rebound for the Beavers.
Leye finished with a game-high 15 points to lead CCNY, which dropped to 3-13 on the year. Adem Dervisevic also added 12 points on four three-pointers in the setback.
The Camels finished the year with a 12-2 record in non-conference action. The last time Conn had more out-of-conference wins in a season was in 2007-08 (13-3).
Conn (14-4 overall) will next host Tufts University on Saturday, January 24 at 3:00 p.m.
