HADLEY, Mass. – Connecticut College first year
Sofia Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) was named NESCAC Player of the Week for the sport of women's basketball, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.
Tavarez came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points and added four rebounds, three assists and a steal in a 55-38 win over Tufts last week. Conn broke open a four-point game with a 15-0 run to start the fourth quarter, where the rookie scored or assisted eight points in the spurt to lead the Camels to their first win over the Jumbos since 2015 and their first win at Tufts since 1996.
Tavarez is the first rookie to earn player of the week honors since 2024. She is also the first Camel to nab the distinction since 2022 and the first Conn rookie since 2015.
"The entire Conn College women's basketball program is thrilled for Sofia on being named NESCAC Player of the Week," said head coach
Brett Zanardi. "She has been an electric player since the day she stepped foot on campus—she brings energy, effort and enthusiasm to our team on a daily basis. We hope this is the first of many accolades for Sofia as a Camel."
Tavarez has played in all 18 games this season and ranks fourth in the NESCAC in scoring with a team-high 14.7 points per game. She has also scored 20 points or more in a game four times this season.
Conn (11-7 overall, 2-3 NESCAC) will next play at Trinity College on Friday, January 30 at 7:00 p.m.
