Women's Hockey Falls Short Against Wesleyan

BOSTON, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team returned to Dayton Arena for the first time in the new year, falling to visiting Wesleyan University 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

It was a slow start as both teams combined for just five shots in the opening 10 minutes. Jillian Wexler (Plainsboro, N.J.) made two saves for Conn, while Jenna Guglielmi made three for Wesleyan. The Camels dominated the final two minutes of the period, recording six shots, but Conn was unable to find the back of the net as the game remained scoreless after one.

Wesleyan had four of the first five shots in the middle frame, but Wexler was up to the task. However, at 8:26, Conn opened the scoring, as Caitlyn O'Donnell (Revere, Mass.) dug a puck out of the corner to Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.) who fired past Guglielmi to make it 1-0. The Cardinals responded down the stretch of the period, as Parker Caldara tied the game at 16:06, before Amelia Molin had Wesleyan in front 2-1 heading to the third.

Wesleyan extended the lead just past the five minute mark in the third as Caldara notched her second goal of the game. Conn responded just two minutes later to cut the deficit to one. Engle threaded a pass to Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) at the point, who fired a shot towards goal that Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) tipped through the legs of Guglielmi to make it 3-2. The Camels kept up the pressure over the final 13 minutes but were unable to find the tying goal, ultimately falling 3-2.

Wesleyan outshot Conn 26-19, while Conn held a 28-22 edge on face-offs.

Wexler got the start in goal finishing with 23 saves. Engle paced the Camels with two points on a goal and an assist, while McGann chipped in a goal, and Bonner added an assist. Engle also led the way with three blocked shots, as Conn went 1-1 on the penalty kill and did not earn any power plays.

Guglielmi got the win in net making 17 saves. Caldara led the Cardinals with three points on two goals and one assist, while Molin added a goal. Wesleyan finished 0-1 on the power play and did not take any penalties.

Conn (4-2-2, 2-1-1 NESCAC) heads out on the road on Friday night as the Camels open up a three game road trip at Middlebury at 7:00 p.m.
