Late Burst Propels No. 2 Trinity Past MBB

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team dropped an 80-67 decision to No. 2 Trinity College on Friday night in NESCAC action at Luce Field House.

Trinity's Jarrel Okorougo led all scorers with 28 points on 11-for-17 shooting and also grabbed eight rebounds. Greg Cantwell (Glen Head, N.Y.) led four Camels in double digits with 18 points and added five rebounds.

Both teams shot it well in the early going, but the Camels led 19-13 by the 13:05 mark thanks to 5-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Cantwell drained three triples while James LaFrance (Guilford, Conn.) added a pair, but the Bantams countered with 6-for-12 shooting to keep it close.

Conn never trailed in the first half and led by as many as 10. The Bantams trimmed the deficit to 39-34 by the break, only the second time all season they've trailed at intermission. Okorougo netted 17 points in the stanza to pace Trinity while Cantwell's 13 led the Camels.

The Bantams tied the game at 41-41 on a three-point play by Henry Vetter just over two minutes into the second half. The teams then played in a tight window over the next eight minutes, with neither side leading by more than a possession.

Trinity pulled away behind a 13-2 burst that resulted in a 66-55 advantage with 4:58 to play. Vetter scored six points during the spurt, and the Camels never got closer than nine the rest of the way.

Jared Berry scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half as the Bantams improved to 18-1 (5-1 NESCAC) on the year. Vetter and Drew Lazarre also chipped in 14 points apiece, and the former also pulled down eight boards.

LaFrance finished with 15 points while Elias Espinosa (Leonia, N.J.) contributed 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. Dylan Watson (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) rounded out Conn's leading scorers with a double-double of 10 points and 11 caroms and added three assists and three steals.

Conn (14-6 overall, 2-4 NESCAC) will next host Wesleyan University on Saturday, January 31 at 3:00 p.m.
