Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Tavarez's 31 Points Leads WBB Past Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team rode a big fourth quarter to a 70-55 victory over Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon in NESCAC action at Silloway Gymnasium.

The Camels used a 17-1 run in the fourth period to secure their third conference victory of the season, the most for the program since the 2018-19 season. Sofia Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) netted a game- and season-high 31 points on 10-for-18 shooting and added seven rebounds and four steals in 38 minutes.

Hayle Thompson (Maynard, Mass.) and Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) also scored in double figures for Conn, finishing with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Sydney Marshall (Enfield, Conn.) led the efforts on the glass with a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Camels raced out to a 20-12 lead after the first quarter and held a 32-28 advantage at intermission. Tavarez scored 14 points in the half to lead all players.

Tavarez, Thompson and Xerras supplied all the scoring in the third quarter, but the Cardinals narrowed the deficit to one by the end of the stanza. Meghan Kirck then drained a three to open the fourth, giving Wesleyan its first lead of the half at 48-46 with 8:57 left in the game.

Valeria Santiago Dedos (Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico) ignited the big run with the first of two triples, and Tavarez scored nine points during the stretch as the Camels pulled away. Wesleyan went 5:33 of game time without a field goal and trailed 63-49 by the 3:39 mark.

Conn cashed in on 22 of 31 trips to the free throw line and held a 43-34 edge on the boards. Tavarez drew 12 fouls on her own and attempted 20 freebies in the contest.

Tavarez's 31 points are the second-most scored by a NESCAC player this season, only one shy of Colby's Kate Olenik's 32-point performance at Maine Maritime on January 20.

Kirck led Wesleyan (6-13 overall, 1-6 NESCAC) with 17 points.

Conn (12-8 overall, 3-4 NESCAC) will next host Hamilton College on Friday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m.
