Weiss's Free Kick Secures 1-1 Draw With Bowdoin on Senior Day

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Max Weiss (Weston, Conn.) scored a free kick with 16 and a half minutes remaining as the Connecticut College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with visiting Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon from Freeman Field.

Conn started the game on the front foot, as the Camels earned multiple free kicks in the opening 15 minutes. Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) took both, but his efforts went just high.

The Camels continued to put pressure on Bowdoin, but most of Conn's efforts were blocked by the Polar Bears defense. The Camels however, nearly opened the scoring with six and a half minutes remaining. Shinya Frank (Menlo Park, Calif.) curled a shot towards the far post, but it struck the iron, as the game remained scoreless at the break.

Devin Kellan (Greenwich, Conn.) had an early chance in the second half, but his effort was stopped by Oliver King. However, at 53:56 Bowdoin opened the scoring. Noah Duffy forced a turnover in the corner, connecting with Jack Banks who put a cross into the box, meeting the leg of Alden Mehta to make it 1-0.

Conn upped the pressure looking for the equalizer, but were unable to break down the Polar Bears defense. Then, with 16 and a half minutes remaining, the Camels earned a free kick on the edge of the box after a Bowdoin handball.

Perugini and Weiss both stood over the ball, before both ran like they were going to take the shot. Weiss stopped and pivoted back on the ball, delivering a strike with his left foot to the near post and beating King to even the score at one.

Conn had two more chances in the final 10 minutes, as both Freddie Taylor (Needham Heights, Mass.) and Charlie Miles (Tarrytown, N.Y.) had headers, but both went high, as the game finished 1-1.

Conn outshot Bowdoin 17-5, including 3-1 on shots on target, and a 6-2 edge on corner kicks.

Shea got the start in net, facing five shots. Weiss tallied the lone goal for the Camels, with Frank and Kellan both putting a one shot on goal.

King got the start in goal, finishing with two saves. Mehta picked up the goal, while both Banks and Duffy tallied an assist.

Conn (9-2-3, 4-2-3 NESCAC) wraps up the regular season on Tuesday night as the Camels host Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m. on Silfen Field.
