Volleyball Rolls Past USJ

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College volleyball team extended its winning streak to five games on Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory over the University of Saint Joseph in non-conference action at Calhoun Gymnasium.

The Camels made quick work of the Blue Jays, winning by set scores of 25-12, 25-9 and 25-20. Keira Deeney (Norwell, Mass.) led a balanced offensive attack with a match-high 10 kills, one of 11 Camels who recorded a kill in the contest. Lexi Rosenblatt (Austin, Texas) and Aubrie Letourneau (Mattapoisett, Mass.) combined to hand out 35 assists while Taylor Merrifield (Honolulu, Hawaii) registered a team-high 13 digs.

Conn jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set and quickly pulled away, finishing with a 19-3 edge in kills for the stanza. Emilie Ferdinand (Stoneham, Mass.) led the charge with five kills in the frame while Vibha Sheth (Austin, Texas) chipped in four.

Things got worse for the Blue Jays in the second set, as the hosts quickly fell behind 8-1 and never recovered. The Camels led by double digits after 18 rallies and bumped the margin to as many as 16 before closing out the set.

Saint Joseph turned the tables in the third set, racing out to a 6-0 lead on the serve of Gabriella Wanner. The Camels fired back with a 6-0 spurt of their own and pulled ahead 11-10 following an ace by Natalie Huang (Waban, Mass.). Conn never trailed again, padding the margin to as many as five before the Blue Jays trimmed the deficit to 22-20. The visitors responded with three straight points—which included kills by Sarah Woodhouse (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Taylor Chatigny (Naples, Fla.) and another ace from Huang—to sew up the victory.

Conn (10-9 overall) will next play at Middlebury College on Friday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m.
