Johnston's Career Day Powers Women's Lax Past Eastern 14-3

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Campbell Johnston tallied a career-high nine points on seven goals and two assists, as the Connecticut College women's lacrosse team kicked off the 2026 season with a dominant 14-3 win over Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon from Silfen Field.

Conn started quickly opening the scoring just 1:16 into the contest. Elizabeth Gill (Hingham, Mass.) fed a pass in front of goal to Hannah Prescott (North Attleboro, Mass.) who fired home to make it 1-0. Eastern responded just two minutes later as Jenna Mahoney converted on a woman-up opportunity to make it 1-1. 

The Camels bounced back just over a minute later as Campbell Johnston (Duxbury, Mass.) converted on a free-position shot to make it 2-1. The teams traded chances for the rest of the quarter, but both goalies stood tall, as Conn led 2-1 after one.

The Camels took control in the second quarter outscoring the Warriors 6-1 in the frame. Prescott notched her second goal of the game off an assist from Johnston, before Alexa Vizzini answered to make it 3-2 at 11:06.

Conn ended the quarter on a 5-0 run, Johnston added three more goals, and both Kate Coughlin (Reading, Mass.) and Sophia Virgilio (Brightwaters, N.Y.) tallying to send the Camels into the break in front 8-2.

Coughlin picked up her second goal of the contest just 1:19 into the second half, finishing off a pass from Johnston to make it 10-2. Just two minutes later, Johnston found the back of the net, extending the advantage to nine. Conn added two more goals in the third quarter, as Gill assisted on both tallies, with the markers coming from Virgilio and Caroline Villarin (Duxbury, Mass.).

Johnston notched her sixth goal early in the final quarter, before Jocelyn Kennedy ended the Camels run at 7:57 to make it 13-3. Johnston added one more goal for good measure with just over four minutes remaining to give Conn the 14-3 win.

Conn outshot Eastern 22-11, while the Warriors held a 10-9 edge on draw controls.

Ava Virga (Watertown, N.Y.) got the start in the cage, finishing with four saves in just over 56 minutes of action, before Sophia Stevens (Shelburne, Vt.) closed out the game facing no shots. Johnston paced the Camels with a career-high nine points on seven goals and two assists, as Gill added four assists, Coughlin notched two goals and an assist, with both Prescott and Virgilio chipping in two goals.

Conn scooped up 22 ground balls, led by four from Kate Sullivan (Westwood, Mass.), as the Camels forced 11 Warrior turnovers, with Hannah Merritt (Cheshire, Conn.) forcing a team-high four, and both Hadley Levendusky (Manchester, Mass.) and Talia Metz-Topodas (Berwyn, Pa.) controlling three draws.

Maizi Rukat got the start in net for Eastern, recording five saves. Vizzini led the way with two points on a goal and an assist, as both Kennedy and Mahoney each added one goal.

Conn continues their season-opening three game home stand on Wednesday as the Camels host Coast Guard at 5:00 p.m. on Silfen Field.
