NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team closed out their weekend series with #8 Williams falling 4-0 to the Ephs on Saturday afternoon from Dayton Arena.
Williams started quickly, forcing three saves from Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) inside the opening three and a half minutes. However, just past the four minute mark the Ephs opened the scoring off a goal from Leah Rubinshteyn at 4:10. Just 46 seconds later Williams made it 2-0 off a tally from Claire Murphy.
Three minutes later, the Ephs pushed the lead to 3-0 on a goal from Lucie Bond. Conn earned two power plays during the remainder of the period, but were unable to capitalize, as the Camels trailed 3-0 after one.
Conn opened the middle frame on the front foot as Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) forced a save from Erin Pye just seven seconds in. Six minutes into the period, Williams earned a woman-advantage, but Jillian Wexler (Plainsboro, N.J.) came up with four saves in rapid succession to keep the score at 3-0.
Conn earned another two power plays in the period, but once again were unable to convert with the extra skater. However, in the dying seconds the Ephs extended the lead to 4-0 as Laney Mead snuck a shot through traffic to send the game to the third period.
The Camels earned an early 5-on-3 power play in the final period and were able to put a couple shots at Pye, but were unable to get on the board. Conn continued to push, looking to cut into the deficit but the clock ran out as the Camels fell 4-0.
Williams outshot Conn 36-35, while Conn held a 30-25 edge on face-off wins.
Galizio got the start in goal, recording five saves, before being replaced by Wexler who stopped 27 shots. Bonner and Sofia Polizzi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the way with six shots on goal, as both Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) won 10 face-offs. Conn finished 1-1 on the penalty kill and 0-6 on the power play.
Pye got the win in net stopping all 35 shots. Bond led Williams with three points on one goal and two assists, while five other Ephs tallied one point. Williams went 0-1 on the power play and 6-6 on the penalty kill.
Conn (7-11-2, 3-10-1 NESCAC) heads out on the road for the final time as the Camels travel to Brunswick, Maine to open up a weekend series at Bowdoin beginning on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
