WBB Drops Non-Conference Finale at Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team fell by a 67-59 final to Bridgewater State University in the first-ever meeting between the schools on Monday evening at the Tinsley Center.

Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) paced the Camels with a season-high 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the floor. She drained five three-pointers in the contest and also added three rebounds and two assists. Hayle Thompson (Maynard, Mass.) supplied a double-double of 11 points and 14 boards while Sofia Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) chipped in nine points and four assists.

Bridgewater State scored the final five points of the opening quarter to lead 20-13 after one. The Bears then did the same right before the half, getting a bucket from Ashleigh Johnson and a triple from Sophie Bradbury to lead 33-24 at the break.

Conn opened the second-half scoring with a three from Lusine Hagopian (North Providence, R.I.) to make it a six-point game, but Haley Burchhardt promptly responded with a long ball of her own on the other end. The Bears went on to outscore the Camels 19-16 in the stanza and took a 52-40 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Camels trailed by as many as 18 in the final period before clawing their way back behind a 10-0 burst. Valeria Santiago Dedos (Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico) got things started with a three, and Xerras later laced a triple with 3:30 to go that made it a 60-52 game.

Xerras's final three of the night brought the Camels to within five at 62-57 with just under a minute to play. However, Bridgewater State's Chloe Azoff went 5-for-6 from the foul line in the final 43 seconds to keep Conn at bay.

Burchhardt led all scorers with 26 points and shot 10-for-12 from the floor as the Bears improved to 12-9 on the year. Bradbury finished with 12 points while Azoff tacked on 11.

Conn (13-10 overall) will close out the regular season at home against Bates College on Friday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m.
