Men's LAX Scores In Final Seconds to Clip Endicott

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team scored in the final seconds to post a 13-12 win over Endicott College in the consolation game of the Headstrong Diplomat Classic on Sunday afternoon at Shadek Stadium.

Matthew Sofarelli (Jupiter, Fla.) netted the game-winning goal with 7.5 seconds remaining to put the Camels on top for good, the fifth and final lead change in a back-and-forth game that featured plenty of momentum swings. It also marked the third straight one-goal game between Conn and Endicott since 2022.

Andrew Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) paced the Camels with a hat trick and two assists for a five-point day. Sofarelli and Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.) added two goals and a helper each while Lorenzo Vogliano (New York, N.Y.) also netted a pair of scores. Ardem Sarajian (Ridgewood, N.J.) scooped up a team-high six ground balls and went 10-for-15 at the faceoff spot, and Patrick Hogan (Wyckoff, N.J.) finished with six saves in goal.

Conn trailed 2-0 after the opening quarter but quickly tied the game thanks to back-to-back unassisted tallies from Rainville in the first 4:44 of the second. Graydon Diamond (New Canaan, Conn.) then gave the Camels their first lead at the 8:28 mark, and Vogliano later made it a 4-3 game with 2:44 left in the half. However, the Gulls notched a pair of goals in the last 1:25 of the period to lead 5-4 at the break.

Early in the third, Ryan Frank (Silver Spring, Md.) thwarted a 10-man ride with a shot from 30 yards out that found the back of the cage, bringing the Camels to within one at 6-5. Endicott responded with two scores to take its largest lead of the game at 8-5.

Conn answered back with six straight goals—the final five of the third quarter and the first of the fourth—to grab an 11-8 advantage. Six different Camels scored during the stretch, with Cooper Growney (New Canaan, Conn.) capping the run with a long pole goal from distance with 13:44 left in the fourth. Ryan Breheny (Bridgewater, Mass.) also handed out a pair of assists during the spurt to help lead the charge.

The Gulls tied the game at 11-11 on a score by Chris Hughes with 5:21 to go. Hughes then struck again 37 seconds later to put Endicott back in front.

With less than 3:00 to play, Conn capitalized on a failed clear by Endicott to even up the game. Rainville picked up a loose ball in his own offensive end and found a wide-open Horkan streaking to the crease. Horkan rifled a shot inside the left post, beating goalie Gio Panicola to his stick side for the equalizer.

Both teams had a chance to hold for the final shot inside the last 1:20, but both committed turnovers. Conn took over possession with 55 seconds to play and moved the ball into its offensive end before taking a timeout. Out of the huddle, the Camels ran the clock down to 12 before giving the ball to Horkan at the top of the zone. Left unmarked behind the cage, Sofarelli slipped into open space in front of the goal and took the feed from Horkan, depositing the game winner with 7.5 seconds to go. Max Garro (Vista, Calif.) then came up with the crucial win on the ensuing faceoff to seal the victory.

Conn (4-2 overall) will next play at Williams College on Saturday, March 21 at 1:00 p.m.
