Women's LAX Drops Spring Break Finale to No. 11 Denison

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team wrapped up their spring break trip, falling to No. 11 Denison 15-4 on Wednesday night from Publix Field.

Denison started quickly, opening the scoring just 55 seconds into the contest, as Mk Barnhart connected with Finlay Harmon to make it 1-0. Ava Virga (Watertown, N.Y.) answered with a goal in net, but Madison Goldstein notched a free-position goal at 10:52 to make it 2-0.

Grayson O'Marra extended the lead to 3-0, before Conn got on the board at 6:34. Elizabeth Gill (Hingham, Mass.) found Sophia Virgilio (Brightwaters, N.Y.) who fired home to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Big Red added a goal with just over two minutes left to lead 4-1 after the first.

The defenses upped their game in the second quarter, with Denison scoring the only two goals in the quarter, 1:12 apart to lead 6-1 at the break.

The Big Red opened the second half on the front foot, scoring twice in the first three minutes to extend the lead to 8-1. Harmon added another goal for Denison to push the lead to 9-1 with nine minutes left.

Hannah Merritt (Cheshire, Conn.) ended the Denison run, firing home to make it 9-2 with four minutes remaining. The Big Red ended the quarter with three goals in the final 1:34 to lead 12-2 heading to the fourth.

Denison struck early in the final frame to extend the lead to 13-2, before Victoria Evans () converted on a free-position opportunity to make it 13-3 with 11:21 remaining. The Big Red scored two more goals, but Campbell Johnston (Duxbury, Mass.) scored with 1:40 remaining to make the final score 15-4.

Denison outshot Conn 34-10, while holding a 14-7 advantage on draw controls.

Virga got the start in the cage, finishing with six saves. Evans, Merritt, Johnston, and Virgilio all tallied one goal, while Gill added an assist.

Evans and Kate Sullivan (Westwood, Mass.) both scooped up two ground balls, while Sullivan added a team-high two caused turnovers, with Merritt collecting three draw controls.

Julianne Henigan got the start in goal, recording four saves, while Kaylyn Kirrane finished the game, making no saves. Harmon led Denison with six points, while nine others tallied at least one point.

Conn returns north to host Williams on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. on Silfen Field.
